T
ravelling to Southeast Asia to start your Cambodian adventure, you’ll discover an unspoilt country on the cusp of development, a charming, friendly population with an old-
world innocence, mangoes so delicious you’ll never forget them and perhaps the most perfect white sand you’ll ever walk on.
Starting in Phnom Penh, an emerging modern city with a history dating back to the 5th century, the Mekong River, one of the great rivers of the world, meanders slowly and the horizon extends far across the plains to the mountains beyond.
Discover the art deco Central Market, Royal Palace, Wat Phnom, a Buddhist temple symbolising the name of Phnom Penh and a historical site part of the Khmer national identity, and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a difficult yet important part of the country’s history as you adjust to a different pace and culture.
Use Phnom Penh as a jumping off point as you head to Siam Reap and Angkor Wat, the jewel in the crown of Cambodia.
Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, a UNESCO world heritage site and a destination of such significance that it is the ultimate highlight of any tour of Cambodia.
From Siam Reap, explore the colonial town of Battambang. Cambodia’s second largest city is largely off the tourist trail and yet has a wealth
of charm and character lurking just beneath the surface. Enjoy delicious regional cooking, excellent prices and quirky activities; the Bamboo Train (essentially a wooden platform) being one such adventure.
From Battambang be prepared for a rough ride through the mountains on the new road. As Cambodia is relatively unspoilt, roads are still being built and at the time of writing, this road was very much under construction. It was worth a few bumps as the beautiful green Tatai River, deep in the jungle, was the ultimate reward.
Listen to the sound of birdsong and watch the morning mist rise over the Cardamom Mountains while the daily commute of a few small river boats break the silence as they pass. Relax on a floating pontoon and catch your breath before you set off to the coast.
From the Tatai River to the south coast, the Gulf of Thailand is a delight with pristine beaches, palm trees, the faint smell of woodsmoke and miles of solitude.
Several islands offer a variety of experiences from luxurious privacy to an unequalled beauty. Rest and relax after your adventures inland as both Krabey and Koh Rong islands provide a serenity and tranquillity topped off with a sunset view.
Cambodia provides a destination unlike anything in the western world. A charm and an innocence which is precious to retain.
