Protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun and free radicals during your season ahead

here’s plenty of research out there that links toxic air with premature skin ageing, so the fact that the global pollution levels are continuing to rise is worrying news for our complexions.
Pollutants generate free radicals on the surface of the skin which can lead to sensitivity. When the level of free radicals exceeds our skin’s defence mechanisms, the skin cells are placed in a state of oxidative stress. This state triggers skin sensitivity, which can lead to a whole host of issues – think pigmentation, premature ageing and a dull, sallow complexion.
5 TIPS FOR HEALTHY SKIN PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE SUN
A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems — as well as increase the risk of skin cancer. For the most complete sun protection, use sunscreen liberally. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wear protective hats with wide brims.
DON’T SMOKE
Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow and makes skin paler.
TREAT YOUR SKIN GENTLY Limit bath time as hot water and long showers remove oils from your skin. Use warm, rather than hot water. Avoid strong soaps and choose mild cleansers. Shave
carefully, using a clean, sharp razor. Pat dry so that some moisture remains on your skin. Moisturise dry skin.
EAT A HEALTHY DIET
Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. A diet rich in fish oil or fish oil supplements and low in unhealthy fats and processed or refined carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin. Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated.

odern technology is amazing, but there’s a price to pay for staring at our screens all day. Recent research has shown that the blue light emitted by our phones, tablets and computer can actually harm our skin and eyes. Also known as high-energy visible light (HEV), blue light can stimulate photo-ageing and over time lead to skin discolouration, inflammation and a weakened skin surface.
There is visible light and then there’s invisible light. Visible light is the light that you can see, such as sunlight or the light from your mobile phone. Invisible light, however, cannot be seen with the naked eye, such as UVA and UVB rays. The next colour of the spectrum is blue light, with a wavelength ranging from 380nm
to 500nm. It has been proven that blue light with a wavelength between 380nm and 400nm is harmful to your skin. The risk seems to decrease somewhat as the wavelength gets closer to 500nm.
We strongly advise fitting your phone with a blue light screen protector. This is a cheap yet effective solution that allows you to use your phone or tablet without having to worry about skincare or sunglasses to limit the damage. Some smartphones also have a setting (often called night mode) that turns off blue light and gives more yellow light instead. Using this setting all the time is much gentler on your eyes and can be a good way to help prevent skin ageing. Simple, but effective.
Thankfully, there’s now a whole host of ways to protect your skin from pollution, from deep-cleansing washes that sweep away every last particle, to serums rich in radical-neutralising vitamin C, and even an instant bronzing gel with a myriad of skin-boosting benefits.
From wintery local walks to getting a breath of fresh air for mental clarity, long distance runs to huddling beneath heaters over drinks with friends; many of us have found solace in the great outdoors over the past few months.
However, there is a particularly inconvenient consequence, though. You may notice that alongside numb fingers, the cold weather is starting to leave your skin irritated, red and dry. Add central heating to that and your face can be left feeling tight and uncomfortable.
HOT-WEATHER MAKEUP
Under a blazing sun, a full face of makeup can feel heavy and even turn runny. Instead of a full face, keep your makeup light. Start with sunscreen, then follow up with a tinted moisturiser, or face powder. Alternatively, keep your skin bare and spot-correct with your favourite concealer. These tips are for the boys too!
