OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING
YACHTIE TYPES THE DELIVERY DRIVER
These guys and girls are probably the most popular people in the world right now. And possibly the busiest. Never have people been happier to see their (completely unnecessary) package get thrown over a fence, into a hedge, dumped onto a passarelle in the rain, or just left with no announcement on the dock. And never have the drivers been happier that they have an excuse to abuse packages even more than usual and more importantly, not to engage with customers either. “Do I need to sign for?“ “Nope bye”. OK then. Have a good day? Lovely. But honestly, thanks guys. We love you!

NAUTICAL ETYMOLOGY... NO ROOM TO SWING A CAT
During punishment all hands were called on deck to bear witness. On a ship with a full crew, the deck could be so crowded that a ‘cat o’ nine tails’ (whip) could not be used without hitting the observers, meaning there was no room to swing a cat.
NAUTICAL HEROES YI SUN SIN
Yi Sun-sin, (born April 28, 1545, Seoul, South Korea]—died Dec 16, 1598. The Korean admiral and national hero whose naval victories were instrumental in repelling Japanese invasions of Korea in the 1590s. He commanded what is thought to have been the first ironclad battleship in history. His most famous victory occurred at the Battle of Myeongnyang, where despite being outnumbered 333 (133 warships, at least 200 logistical support ships) to 13, he managed to disable or destroy 31 Japanese warships without losing a single ship.
There are three sorts of people; those
who are alive, those who are dead, and
those who are at sea. Anacharsis, 6th Century BC
VACCINE CONSPIRACIES are floating around the interwebs galore right now. With many crew (and others) claiming they won’t be vaccinated, what will happen if yacht owners decide to make it mandatory to work on board their vessels? Will the anti vax brigade become the ‘sheep’ they so publicly mock in order to keep their jobs or will they go home to live and work ashore, unable to travel again? Time will tell….
WEARING YOUR MASK UNDER YOUR NOSE is more than annoying, it’s rude. Is it really that hard to use something the way it’s intended for? You know who you are, just know that everyone thinks you’re an inconsiderate and stupid person.
BREXIT is so not hot. Cold in fact. Seafarers from the UK are suddenly faced with decisions to make and having a great deal of freedom taken away, especially with regards to the freedom of movement. Many who’ve been flying under the radar will now have to either seek residency in a European country or, spend considerably less time there.
COVID VACCINE With a covid vaccine being distributed around the world, there’s a new hope for some sort of new normality for 2021! Crew will hopefully be able to travel more easily, and over all the feeling for the Med summer season this year is a lot more positive.
SITTING IN STUFFY CLASSROOMS is so out right now – who does that? Did anyone really enjoy that? And will we ever return to this way of studying unless it’s a hands on course where we need to be there in real life? Online learning is where it’s at with many seaschools and training facilities continuing to teach from a safe distance.
SUPPORTING SMALL LOCAL BUSINESSES There’s been a great effort to avoid the large online giants by those who can afford to spend a little more to keep money coming into communities affected by the virus. Let’s hope this change is here to stay, stay local, shop local.
BABIES are EVERYWHERE. Lockdown obvious got a lot of couples feeling amorous, well, more drunk then amorous.… seems like facebook and Instagram are overloaded with newborn pictures right now. Stop it, please. Bring back the talking dogs and acrobatic squirrels.
