Winter glow
If you’re looking for a winter tan, you don’t really have to jump on a plane to the Maldives
N
ow, we all know how important it is to protect our skin from harmful UV rays and the days of tanning beds and long
hours baking in the sun for a golden glow are long gone. Even with proper coverage, you can still achieve a subtle glow during the summer months, but keeping that sun-kissed look throughout the winter season presents another challenge.
Tanning beds were the go-to winter tanning method years ago, those of us of a ‘certain age’ can remember the dodgy green goggles tied up with fraying elastic and the sweaty plastic beds you’d lie on and then close the lid. It was no surprise the research showed that they were just as harmful when it comes to skin cancer and aging - really, did we need the research?
The solution - sunless self tanners. At home serums, lotions, and mousses are a completely safe way to achieve a natural, fresh-off-the-
beach look at any time of year, and many have added ingredients designed to benefit your skin, not harm it.
Add a little warmth back into the skin without your fellow crew members suspecting a thing. We even have tips on the drink (yes, drink) to avoid whilst tanning and the giveaway signs to avoid.
It’s important to choose a self-tan product that doesn’t contain alcohol or parabens as these dry out the skin, which causes a tan to break down faster and thus crack and go scaly—not chic.
But we’re not just talking products here. Yes, we all like a glass of red while we’re waiting for our tan to develop, but according to the experts and let’s face it common sense, it might not be such a good idea. The alcohol will dehydrate skin and encourage the tan to fade before it has even developed, so how committed are you?
TIPS FOR SELF-TANNING Exfoliate
Absolutely essential for ensuring self tanning products dry and display colour evenly. Remember, skin is dryer in the winter, so a gentle exfoliator that won’t further dry out your skin is best. Avoid tanners with alcohol.
Moisturise before and after Winter skin means naturally dry areas like the hands,
elbows, knees, and feet are susceptible to cracking. Apply moisturiser to these areas
before applying any self tanning product, don’t forget about the nails and cuticles.
Think natural for the face A subtle bronzed face can hide redness, make you look brighter overall and even whitens the teeth. There’s nothing more telling than a fake tanning routine, so, go easy on the face and use circular motions.
Less is more Remember, we’re not looking TIPS FOR WINTER SKIN CARE
Keep your skin moisturised As the weather outside gets cold and dry, so does your skin. The colder temperature strips the skin of its natural moisture and shrinks your pores considerably. And to make things worse, moving from cold to warmer temperatures in doors just accelerates the process too. The solution? Regular moisturizing to keep your skin moist and supple throughout the season.
Switch up your diet Eating certain fruits and veggies can actually give your skin a golden glow. These sun-friendly foods contain carotenoids - known foods with high levels include; carrots, sweet potatoes, strawberries and dark, leafy vegetables, like kale. Your stomach absorbs only 70%, so the excess is stored in the fat below your skin and these pigments shine through your skin to give a golden glow.
Watch your hands The skin on hands will be drier in the winter months. The constant work and washing your hands will just drain them of moisture. Protect your hands when working and wear gloves when out in the cold. Moisturise you hands in the morning and before bedtime. Don’t forget the cuticles of your nails and stay clear of harmful liquids like bleach or other cleaners.
for a walnut coloured tan here, just a gentle warm glow. Start off slow, don’t try to hurry things by slapping on too much lotion. Watch your hands and use a mitt when covering other body areas.
It’s never too late to tan When impromptu invitations
make their way into your inbox, you can still add a little glow to your limbs. The answer
here is skin-finishing, which is fundamentally like makeup for the body. For this, you’re looking for instant products with built-in golden or bronze pigments to give skin a little lift whatever your skin tone.
