ADVERTORIAL

ON AUTO PILOT

Automated

manoeuvring has arrived. Kongsberg Maritime are bringing this exciting innovation to the superyacht world

B

y combining traditional navigation sensors, with optical scanning of the surroundings, and clever use of dynamic positioning, a new level of safety for navigation in confined waters can be achieved. Giving

increased awareness for the captain.

An inhouse developed camera cluster called SeaEye, is constantly monitoring the surroundings, streaming data to the main computer, named SeaAware. A 3D model of the surroundings is generated, overlaid on the ECDIS charts and merged with radar data.

All objects within the vicinity are detected, tracked and classified using machine learning. Objects are checked against information in the chart, ARPA and AIS targets, and presented on a dedicated situational awareness display, or overlaid on the ECDIS. Kongsberg claims objects as small as 0,5sqm can be detected at a 500m range. Optionally, a pan/tilt camera, with infrared capacity can be automatically directed to investigate specific objects. The user can change his viewpoint within the 3D model, using an augmented reality forward looking view, with route information and object data overlaid on the camera

situational

Kongsberg has merged the autopilot/ trackpilot with their dynamic positioning systems, introduced new functionality and renamed it Advanced Manoeuvring. Their Poscon Advanced Manoeuvring uses the same mathematical model of the yacht, to be able to predict environmental forces, and the effects on the yacht. The software is however optimized for executing smooth movements, rather than staying in position. All presented on a small touchscreen user interface, with additional information overlaid on the ECDIS, to simplify the operation.

In addition to the traditional autopilot and track pilot, the captain now gets some interesting features. First, an all-speed autopilot will enable the vessel to utilize all thrusters to maintain heading, course or track at very low speeds. Further, a special Tender Launch mode increases safety with small boats or toys through side hatches. Dynamic position features like anchor assist, station-keeping or electronic anchoring are obviously still available.

feed, a downwards looking birds eye view, with the chart as reference when docking, or a view from the opposite bridge wing, to cover blind spots whilst manoeuvring. A new use for dynamic positioning.

Integration and further development With the launch of the new systems, Kongsberg Maritime also see large opportunities integrating Situational Awareness and Advanced Manoeuvring tighter within their bridge systems.

Using the object database of the Situational Awareness system as an input to the autopilot, means automatic collision avoidance is already on the drawing board, and is due for testing on the first installations this coming summer. As a current function the system calculates the centre and best heading for safe dock/wharf entries, and presents this on the navigation system. Looking a few years ahead, Kongsberg believes the system will be capable of detecting berthing locations, calculating approach strategies and automatically performing the docking.

Sales Director for the cruise, yacht and passenger segment at Kongsberg Maritime, Roger Trinterud, however assures that their systems will always leave the last saying to the captain! Even though much of the functionality is intended for use on their autonomous cargo projects, the functionality intended for yachts and other passengers vessels, are built with user interface as priority, presenting the intended actions to the captain, asking for his acceptance before execution.

Kongsberg Maritime is a global technology company providing ‘Full Picture’ solutions for yachts. Headquartered in Norway, Kongsberg Maritime has manufacturing, sales and service facilities in 40 countries.
