More from Manitou
The distinctive red colouring and respected Manitou branding has been applied to the Group’s loaders that were previously yellow Mustang machines. Nick Johnson reports.
In the past, Manitou UK has chosen the Executive Hire Show to exhibit a yellow skid steer loader alongside its more familiar red materials handlers and access platforms. Now, following a rebranding exercise last year, a comprehensive line-up of skid steer, compact track and small articulated wheel loaders are all an integral part of the manufacturer’s distinctive red equipment portfolio.
Having started with materials handling machinery, Manitou diversified first into powered access platforms, with its own range of machines, and then, in 2008, into small loaders, by buying Gehl in the USA. The latter purchase brought with it Mustang and, for over a decade, the separate Gehl and Mustang brands were retained, although their products increasingly utilised common platforms.
Last year saw a change of corporate strategy when Manitou announced that, in Europe, the yellow Mustang machines would be re-coloured red and sold as Manitous through the company’s own dealer network. Meanwhile, the Gehl brand, with its yellow machines, has been retained as a separate entity and is sold through other dealers - such as Filtermech - in the UK.
Manitou UK has been busy promoting its red loader line. One of the small articulated loaders, the 26.1kW (35hp) MLA3-35H is expected to be prominent at the Show. There are also four small Manitou compact wheel loaders with Yanmar engines, hydrostatic transmissions and conventional loader arms. The others are the 17.9kW (24hp) MLA 1-25H, the 35.0kW (47hp) MLA 4-50H, the 35.0kW (47hp) MLA 5-50 H-Z and the 49.0kW (65hp) MLA 6-65 H-Z.
The MLA 1-25H with canopy weighs 1,744kg (when fitted with forks) and has a 435kg rated operating capacity with bucket. Maximum hinge pin height is 2,705mm and the machine width of only 860mm allows access into confined spaces.
The 1.32m-wide MLA 3-35 H has a rated operating capacity (with bucket) of 860kg. Available with canopy or cab, it has parallel loader linkage and a maximum rated operating capacity with bucket of 860kg. An unladen weight of 2,472kg allows convenient transportation on a plant trailer, such as the two-axle Nugent P32718H, as seen at a recent demonstration for Manitou dealers.
Extended range
Manitou dealers can now benefit from being able to sell the extended range of Manitou-branded products made in the company’s own factories. The latest skid steer loaders, developed from a long line of well-accepted Gehl and Mustang machines in the USA, comprise eight radial arm (R) and three vertical lift (V) models.
Quoting their rated operating capacities in brackets, the red Manitou skid steers are the 850R (386kg), 1050R (476kg), 1350R (612kg), 1500R (680kg), 1650R (748kg), 1900R (862kg), 2200R (998kg), 2600R 1,179kg), 2700V (1,225kg), 3300V (1,497kg) and the large 4200V (1,905kg). The flagship 4200V has a 90.0kW (120.7hp) Deutz engine whilst all its smaller brothers have Yanmar engines.
The small 850R is only 900mm wide and has an unladen weight of 1,279kg. It comes with T-bar style hands-only controls. The 1050R is wider at 1.22m but it scores by having a lower overall height of 1.78m. This model can be supplied with hands-only or hands-and- feet controls.
Some Manitou skid steers can be supplied with dual hand controls and the popular twin hydraulic pilot joysticks. All models have Level II ROPS/FOPS overhead guards and there is the option of fully enclosed cabs.
The MLA 3-35 H can be legally transported between jobs on a twin axle plant trailer like this Nugent P32718H.

The convenient hydrostatic drive system on the wheeled skid steers utilises one drive motor on each side to supply power through pre- stretched heavy-duty roller chains to each pair of wheels. The 1650R and above can have two-speed drive, while a Hydraglide ride control system is an option on and 1500R to 2600R radial lift models and standard on all three vertical lift machines.
