equipment. He also urged companies to share information and warn other hirers and contractors in their areas about thefts and scams.
Kevin Howells of Datatag spoke of the effectiveness of the Cesar security and registration theft deterrent system. This uses an electronic transponder in combination with ‘datadots’ containing information to identify individual machines. More than 340,000 items of equipment have been registered since Datatag introduced the scheme.
Plant hirers can play a key role in promoting environmentally friendly practices.
The final session concerned the CPA’s skills strategy to identify industry training requirements and to establish methods of delivering them. CPA’s Policy Manager, Chris Cassley, said there are significant skills and employment shortages, with challenges in recruitment and retention, particularly for plant operatives, mechanics, hire controllers, plant managers and HGV drivers. Organisations like HS2 and Highways England have reported rising future demand for these occupational groups.
Chris Cassley said research showed that plant operators in particular represented an employment and skills challenge against the background of an ageing workforce. Measures were needed to
attract and retain new industry entrants, and these could include enhancing the profile of the profession, introducing new ‘trailblazer’ apprenticeships and ensuring training provision is available locally to people and businesses.
