ALAN GUTHRIE CELEBRATES 20 YEARS AS EDITOR
As you can clearly see, EHN Editor Alan Guthrie enjoyed a quiet night out in Glasgow at the end of November with special dinner guests Douglas (left) and Iain Anderson of GAP Group. The celebratory dinner was hosted by former EHN Publisher
Rob Aplin, who comments, “Alan has served our industry with integrity and honesty throughout the first 20 years of this new Millennium.
“Month in, month out, he has
travelled the length and breadth of the UK to accurately and fairly report on all the latest industry developments from passionate hirers and innovative suppliers. In particular, Alan has led this magazine’s campaigns in response to the key Health & Safety challenges that our industry has faced over the last two decades. “He played a pivotal role in our
Hand Arm Vibration Conferences in 2005 and 2006, and has since been at the forefront of EHN’s Dust and Green initiatives. He has become a trusted friend of our industry. In short, he is an industry treasure. “He also played a vital role in the development of the Executive Hire Show, in which he was a founding shareholder.”
From EHN, January 2000. Bobcat remote control impresses BooBoo
The UK’s first Bobcat remote control compact loader has increased safety and reduced costs on a demolition contract in London. Purchased by BooBoo Plant Hire of Kings Langley, the adapted S450 skid steer loader is working on the top-down demolition of a former wing of the Whittington Hospital in North London. The machine was quickly fitted with a remote control kit.
It allows the operator to leave the cab and control the S450 remotely whilst maintaining visibility and safety. The system is compatible with any Bobcat skid steer, compact track and all-wheel steer loader equipped with the manufacturer’s selectable joystick controls.
Tsurumi Pumps buys Obart
For over 40 years, Obart Pumps have been serving the UK hire industry. On 13 December, the shareholders of Obart Pumps reached an agreement to sell the company to Tsurumi (Europe) GmbH, which became effective on 1 January. Tsurumi is one of the world’s leading submersible pump
manufacturers. Formed in 1924, it was the first company in Japan to manufacture submersible pumps and has four factories, producing over 600,000 pumps per year. Tsurumi wishes to build upon the success Obart Pumps has
created in the single-phase contractor market, by growing UK sales of 3-phase and wastewater pumps. It has been a Tsurumi distributor since 1975. Obart’s Matthew Hill said, “I will continue to work for Obart and will
Harry Allen, Owner of BooBoo Plant Hire, commented: “As well
as increased safety, the remote control saves costs by removing the need for a banksman as a lookout for the machine.”

retain my role as MD. Tsurumi are looking for me to not only expand the Tsurumi brand in the UK, but also to maintain and grow all of our product groups. I am confident this transition will only see a positive impact for our customers in the future.”
