WEXHAM CUP T
he 64th Annual Wexham Cup Bull Show and Sale of Pedigree Holstein bulls took place on bonfire night, 5th November, on behalf of members of the Western Holstein Club, but there wasn’t much spark about the whole sale, with the challenges the dairy industry is facing really starting to bite. Top price was 2900gns and this was achieved on two occasions, the first was the De- Su Observer son, Woodmarsh Zorber from M and J C Gould,
REALITY HITS BEESTON TRADE

n 10th November at Beeston Castle
the effects of a severe downturn on dairy farmers’ incomes generated through the dreadful diminishing prices
producers are receiving for their milk, finally caught up with trade for milking cattle. Prices for the best were hit dramatically, taking a price hit on average by some £300 a head.
The top price of the day was only £1800 and this was achieved on two occasions. The first at this figure was Dilandy Wyman Mapleleaf from Andrew Shakeshaft, Ellesmere. This heifer was sold giving 36kg and sold to Brian Parker, Haughton, Stafford.
The Sutton family, Astbury, Congleton, also had a great line-up of heifers with their best animal selling for the joint top bid of £1800. This was for Rowarton Fever Orchid, a daughter of Crackholm Fever sold giving 33kg to D and H E Colclough and Son, Hassall, Sandbach.
Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury. This bull is bred from seven generations of VG or EX dams from the well known Zandra family and was purchased by R H Lewis and Son, Crickheath, Oswestry.
Also at this price was the second prize genomic bull, Cottonabbots Jaeger from Andrew Walley, a son of De- Su Balisto out of a VG85 Misty Springs Supersonic sired dam. He was purchased by Messrs Gaskin, Chirk, Wrexham.
CRAVEN DAIRY AUCTION

he early November Craven Dairy Auction held on 9th November reached a high of £2000 for Ravensgate Dragon Sheila 156 from Peter Baul. Sired by Overside Dragon she sold 21 days calved and giving 28 litres to Alf and Andrew Townsend, Southfield, Burnley. Averages: heifers £1673, cows £1537, in-calf heifers £1107, heifer calves £265. KEPCULLOCH LEAD BORDER AND LAKELAND TRADE

n 25th November the Border and Lakeland show and sale at Borderway, Carlisle, attracted a large crowd of buyers from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Trade hit a top of 3500gns to average £1589 with cattle going to 16 counties.
Judge Willy Brewster, Stirling, tapped out Kepculloch Fever Laurie from Robert Steel as champion. She is a daughter of Crackholm Fever and bred from the Laurie Sheik cow family made so famous by all the
incredible Comestar sires. This long, black, stylish heifer has the potential to be a big timer and will show as a senior two year old next spring at UK Dairy Expo, she sold for a top price of 3500gns to George and Jason Booth from the Beechview Holstein herd, Northern Ireland. Averages: 10 cows in milk £1287.38, 79 heifers in milk £1589.27, 27 British Friesian heifer calves £459.28. (Harrison and Hetherington)
