fortuitous timing, with a large number of cattle lost to TB the compensation allowed them to raise enough capital to put the project within financial grasp. “The first wind survey of the site reported an excellent supply of constant wind, with an average wind speed of 7m/ sec at 30 metres high. So with confidence in the site, a wind speed survey using an anemometer wasn’t required. Subsequently planning permission was applied for with a number of surveys being carried out over 10 months, including a noise survey, which wasn’t an issue as the direct drive generator produces minimum noise. Also a flicker survey monitoring shadow flickering from the rotating blades was carried out,” explains Jim.


“We applied for a 225kWh turbine and with understanding farmers as near neighbours there were no issues with the planning. But, following a private survey on the electricity supply running through the farm it was found that a 170kWh turbine would be the maximum the line would cope with.” During research in to smaller turbines Jim realised there were more benefits and decided on a 100kWh direct drive machine with the electricity generated through the mechanics of copper wiring and permanent magnets. The decision was made to purchase a Northwind 100kw - a direct drive turbine on a 37m tower with 21m blade span and a five year warranty. “Having a simple machine with less mechanics at the top of the turbine means there should


be less problems and less maintenance. The connection charge to the 3-phase line for a smaller machine was £21,000. The best turbines use the direct drive system, there is less resistance when the blades start turning allowing them to turn at low wind speed,” explains Jim.


“Investing in the wind turbine has allowed us to get on with farming, while saving money and generating some extra money. The entire project cost £320,000. So far, the wind turbine is exceeding the predicted performance of 200 – 220,000 kWh and since it was first switched on in May 2012 it has consistently produced more than 250,000 units a year. “We believe the turbine is


efficient and modern and will generate a reasonably good
