GAVIN PATERSON
I
t is with sad regret that we say goodbye to one of our best known cattle breeders, Gavin Paterson. Gavin was well known within the Norfolk Club as one of the most respected and gifted breeders in the country. Taking over Worstead Farms in 1950, he established the Lyngate herd and built it into one of the leading herds in the country. Gavin achieved numerous breed and female championships in leading shows in East Anglia over many years.
WINIFRED SLOAN
Winifred Sloan, wife of former Holstein UK President, Drew Sloan OBE, passed away on 25th November 2015, aged 70. Winifred dedicated her life to public service holding different political offices at local and national level prior to being elected to the Kyle and Carrick District Council in 1992. In 1996, she was elected Provost of South Ayrshire by her fellow councillors until stepping down from the role in 2012 due to ill- health.
Winifred was heavily involved with numerous charity organisations including the Armed Forces as well as various children’s organisations
At national level he further triumphed at the Royal Show, International Dairy Show, Scottish Dairy Show, North Western Dairy Show and at the World Conference Show. A unique achievement was at Suffolk Show in 1968 when he won British Friesian and interbreed dairy champion with Lyngate Car Angela. In the same year, his father, the late James Paterson, was Ayrshire champion and reserve interbreed champion with Dilham Manor Gen Nellie. Also in 1968 Gavin won the Terling Challenge Cup with the best group of British Friesians at the Royal International Dairy Show at Olympia.
Gavin represented the Eastern region on Society council in 2004 becoming National President of the Society in 2004. Alongside well known agricultural achievements he served the community in many other ways. Not least the Worstead Festival which over the years raised many thousands of pounds for the restoration of Worstead Church and other worthwhile causes.
and was described by former colleagues as an “inspiration.” Her immense popularity resulted in an estimated 1000 people attending her service of thanksgiving.
Winifred started her career as a policewoman in Paisley prior to marrying Drew Sloan in 1970 and swapped life on the beat for life on a farm. Winifred was a partner in her husband’s agricultural business, H D Sloan and Associates, that marketed bovine semen within Scotland from bulls standing at stud in Canada.
In 1975, H D Sloan and Associates was awarded the full UK franchise under the newly formed Semex Canada umbrella resulting in a company name change to Semex UK Sales. Winifred remained involved
In 2006, he was awarded the MBE for this work and for other services to the community. Gavin was involved in many other organisations, not least the Aylsham Agricultural Society for which he was president in 1975. He was also involved with the Caledonian Society of Norfolk and on many occasions piped in New Year. His other interests included his support for Norwich City Football Club and he was elected onto the board of directors in 2004 where he remained as vice president until his death.
Gavin was, for more than 40 years, an enthusiastic member of the Norfolk Holstein Club. He was chairman in 1965 and was elected president in 2003. Gavin will be deeply missed by all who knew him. After all his achievements his real love of the black and white breed continued until the end. The Club offers its sincerest condolences to Marcia, Gavin junior, Alex, Bruce, his daughter in law Alice and his grandchildren.
