Name: Harrison Mellor Age: 26
PROFILE
How long have you been in HYB? I have been a member of HYB since 2003, this was same year I persuaded my father to register the herd to be pedigree.
What have your highlights been? My highlights have been competing in both stock judging and linear assessment competitions, I have been placed first on numerous occasions within the Derbyshire Holstein Club. At national level I came third in senior linear assessment in 2014 and in 2015, I also came joint third in senior stock judging.
What is your favourite event in the HYB calendar? My favourite event in the HYB calendar is National competition day, I enjoy competing in stock judging and linear assessment. When I have been able to free myself from farming duties I have really enjoyed the weekend rallies, getting involved in the activities and meeting some great people. But most of all, the herd visits, seeing some excellent cows in different parts of the country.
What do you think you’ve gained from HYB? The opportunity to meet like-minded people with a keen interest in cows. I have gained a lot of knowledge particularly from clipping demonstrations. This has been useful to me when preparing my own cows for selling. I have gained a lot from listening to master judges at stock judging events, pointing out the most outstanding assets an animal must display to make it a good dairy cow.
What other hobbies do you have? I’m active member of Buxton Young Farmers and I am always keen to get involved in any sporting activities.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I hope to have survived the volatile milk price by keeping an eye on all input costs
Club: Derbyshire Prefi x: Braemarhouse
Occupation: Partner in the family business, responsible for herd management
and making the best use of available labour. The most important asset will be to source semen from the highest genetic bulls in the world and carry on breeding robust high health status Holstein cows, which can convert forage efficiently in a commercial environment.
What would you say to someone to encourage them to take part in HYB? Join in, it’s a great way to meet new people with the same interest as you, who could become friends for life. I also recommend taking part in as many activities as you can, the more you put in the more you get out. Plus it’s a good opportunity to see different parts of the country.
What would you like to see new added to the HYB programme?
More herd visits, it always good to see cows in working condition, also more social events.
