marketed as a young genomic sire. The popular American sire Baxter appears three times in Silverado's pedigree, twice as Satisfaction's great grandsire and also as the grandsire of Silverado's dam.

His big genomic result attracted AI attention and he now is housed in Cumbria by Pete Sherwin. Pete regards him as the best looking bull among a number of young Holsteins he collects at his Scawfell stud and is looking forward to eventually getting him classified. Unfortunately, the bull tested positive for IBR, so his semen cannot go into Northern Ireland. However, there are plans for him to be shipped across to the Province for collection there in the near future.

Big Components with moderate stature

Major attractions of Silverado's

genetic evaluation are the high fat (0.18) and protein (0.12) percentages. He also scores well for fertility and lifespan and is predicted to be a terrific calving ease sire. While his type scores may not excite show enthusiasts, a linear without major fault is good enough for a solid 1.3 overall type merit score. A useful bonus is the breed average 0.05 for stature, combined with a small plus for chest width, which gives him a distinctly different frame profile to a lot of other young genomic sires currently available.

Scawfell, Molecare and Sterling

Silverado is marketed in Great Britain by Sterling Sires, Molecare Genetics and Scawfell Genetics. Simon Gee of Sterling Sires says; "Silverado is a well balanced, high PLI sire,

comparable with the best bulls in the world, among those available in the UK." Mr Gee points out that he is keen to develop a strong core of UK bred bulls such as Silverado for Sterling Sires. Ideally in the future these would make up 25% of the bulls which Sterling Sires markets, says Mr Gee. As with all young genomic sires, his reliability is modest (63% for PLI), so he is not recommended for use over an entire herd, but rather as part of a group of mating sires. Breeders seeking to moderate stature while maintaining overall type in combination with elite PLI, will consider him an attractive option. Above all he is another example of the profile that can be achieved by genomic testing British Holsteins.
