Focus on DTG Printing
It’s all about the fibrillation (and lack of it)!
Anyone will tell you; garment selection is key when it comes to direct to garment printing. Here we take a look at what makes a great DTG garment.
I
he best garments to select for direct to garment printing are those comprised of combed, ring spun cotton. The make up of these soft feeling cotton garments provide fewer hanging fibres, which helps to create a smooth and flat printing surface i.e. low fibrillation.
Fibrillation in printing is when the fibres of a shirt stick through the ink deposit, giving the garment a faded or hairy look – which is not ideal!
Here are some options to consider so you can achieve the perfect DTG print for your customers.
Achieve the perfect print
AS Colour says it is currently seeing a huge increase in sales from DTG print on demand customers for its Classic T (5026). The super smooth 220gsm combed cotton 22 singles surface is perfect for this print sector and many DTG sellers demo using the Classic T. The tee comes in 16 on trend colours S-3XL, with ecru, camel, coal and cardinal soon to be introduced. The Classic T is side seamed with neck ribbing, shoulder to shoulder tape and double needled hems.
When it comes to providing a suitable canvas for print, Gildan says its products are a decorator’s dream. In particular the cotton, ring spun collections. Softer than open-end cotton, the tighter weave of ring spun cotton also delivers longer-lasting durability wash after wash, not to mention a cleaner print surface. Highlights of the range include the Gildan Softstyle 64EZO Adult EZ Print T-shirt and 64000 Adult T-Shirt.
For an organic option, why not consider Vanilla. The VAN111 Men’s Organic Cotton Tee is made from 100% sustainable material and is perfect for DTG printing. This stylish and comfortable tee comes with a crew neck and a self-fabric back neck and shoulder tape. New to Vanilla’s organic range this year is the VAN203 Men’s Organic Sweatshirt and VAN202 Men’s Organic Hoodie. These are 100% sustainable garments and ideal for layering. Full needle double layering combined with twin needle seams allow for comfort as well as style, with a tear out label for personalisation. And speaking of sweats, both Kustom Kit and Gildan have great printing options here too.
Kustom Kit’s range of sweatshirts are perfect for DTG printing thanks to the cotton printability and smooth surface. The KK333/ KK334 knitted sweats are constructed from a blend of 80% ring spun combed cotton and 20% polyester. They have a brushed back for a soft hand feel and a versatile weight of 280gsm. Thanks to the polyester fibre being introduced at the core of the fabric, the knit benefits a 100% cotton printing surface, making it the perfect choice for DTG printing.

Gildan offers the heavyweight options of the HF000 Adult Crew Sweatshirt and HF500 Adult Hooded Sweatshirt, for those looking for something a little different to print on. There are plenty of other tees and sweats out in the market which are perfect for DTG printing. Just be sure to look out for garments that are made of combed, ring spun cotton. The tighter the weave the better.
