from school days spent on rides instead behind a desk. Those of us in the industry know there is much to be learned from the attractions industry, and for years parks have hosted unique field trips that help students understand how rides move and spin - acceleration, velocity, force, energy and more. Can you think of a better academic adventure? Carowinds group sales director Marc Gran invited me to discuss having a

career in the attractions industry. It was one of those moments where life felt it had come full circle – could the former park student temporarily become a park teacher? Well, with Carowinds boasting 13 roller coasters, including two of the 10 tallest in the world, how could I say no? Nor do they listen to the radio. Ever. I couldn’t help but wonder who was really schooled that day. Once I finished my presentation and verified no one had fallen asleep, the

students and I were released into the park. I headed straight to Fury 325. It is North America’s longest steel coaster, traveling over 1.25 miles for 3.25 minutes, even crossing both the North and South Carolina state lines during its run– something Marc shared as we rode. I was screaming as we flew along; luckily he repeated the fact once we pulled into the station. On roller coasters, my seat of choice is always in the front row. I love the moment the car hovers at the first hill before flying into the smooth ballet of speed, inclines and descents. Fury did not disappoint. After that incredible ride, I ate fried Oreos, posted for the “required”

photo on the aforementioned state line, and purchased Peanuts character merchandise. Perhaps I am not so different from those students. Did they learn much? I hope so. Were they inspired to work in this industry because of a field trip? I don’t know. I believe they had a great time, saw
