MARKET REPORT: NORTH AMERICA
coaster in the state. It will travel more than 60 mph (97 kph) and cover nearly 2,500 feet (760 m) of track. After disembarking Emperor, riders will pass and see actual emperor penguins, for which the coaster is named. Riders will shiver through family friendly
adventures on SeaWorld Orlando’s first launch coaster, Ice Breaker. It’s from Premier Rides. Named after the icy Arctic summits, Ice Breaker will feature four launches, both backwards and forwards, culminating in a reverse launch into the steepest beyond vertical drop in Florida — a 93 foot (28 m) tall spike with 100º angle. Top speed will be 52 mph (84 kph). Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, Virginia,
will introduce Pantheon, a record-breaking multi-launch coaster. From Intamin, the 3,328 foot long ride will feature a total of four launches. Measuring 180 feet tall, this coaster, to be located in the park’s Festa Italia village and will reach a top speed of 72.5 mph, making it the fastest multi-launch coaster in North America.
Bolt on a Boat Legoland New York in Goshen will entertain visitors on two new coasters. Dragon Coaster is a Zierer Force Five dark family coaster. It will climb 55 feet and hit 35 mph. It will zip in and out of a Lego- themed castle, where passengers will encounter show scenes. Dragon’s Apprentice is a 263 foot long Zamperla Family Gravity Coaster 80STD. It will be a kiddie coaster that will make two passes around its short course. Both rides will be mild, acknowledging the park’s demographics of families with younger children. Then there is Bolt, the powered Spike
coaster from Maurer Rides that is in North America part-time. Bolt is aboard the Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras, so when
Jurassic World VelociCoaster
it is docked in its Florida port it can be claimed as a North American coaster. It was supposed to open in 2020, but with the ship now set to be christened in 2021, passengers will be able to cruise around its deck on the ride’s motorcycle-inspired cars, controlling their own speed. Florida’s fastest and tallest launch
coaster, chased by a pack of fierce Velociraptors, will be unleashed at Universal Orlando Resort in 2021 with the debut of Jurassic World VelociCoaster. Concepted and designed by the Universal Creative team in partnership with acclaimed filmmakers from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, this new species of roller coaster from Intamin touts a series of intense maneuvers that will send guests catapulting up to 70 mph (113 kph) and more than 150 feet (46 m) in the air with the swiftest of prehistoric predators. Stunt Pilot will be the seventh coaster at
Silverwood in Athol, Idaho. It will feature a single-rail track and low-slung, single- passenger cars. From Rocky Mountain Construction, Stunt Pilot will deliver three inversions and offer abrupt transitions between elements that will mimic the aerobatic maneuvers of vintage airplanes. This biplane-themed coaster will recall the air shows that were hosted by the Idaho theme park in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The 113- foot-tall ride will reach a top speed of 52 mph over a 1,800-foot-long track.
Coney Island Coaster One of the most talked-about new coaster of 2021 is coming to the new Funplex Myrtle Beach oceanfront amusement park in South Carolina. Fun in the Sun is an SBF Visa Big Air Coaster with spinning cars and a so-called 360º Car that spins vertically like a human hamster wheel. The Big Air Coaster was introduced by New Jersey-based Rides 4-U at the 2019 IAAPA Expo. Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia,
California, has reintroduced West Coast Racers after an abbreviated season. It is the park’s 20th roller coaster, which is more than any other theme park. From Premier Rides, this quasi möbius layout is the world’s first single track quadruple racing coaster. Unlike traditional coasters, this one-of-a-kind racing coaster features two side-by-side tracks with four individual high-speed LSM launches. The immersive journey on the unique terrain-hugging track has riders sitting two abreast while racing head to head with the other cars on the twin track. The ride experience includes two complete laps, multiple airtime hills, extreme high- banked turns and exhilarating over/under near misses. Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park,
Brooklyn, New York, was never able to open in 2020 and celebrate the 100th anniversary of its famed Wonder Wheel. So this year they will introduce Phoenix, a Vekoma Suspended Family Coaster, the park’s largest-ever investment. When complete, Phoenix will be 68 feet (21 m) tall, 1,296 feet (395 m) long, and carry up to 20 guests in a ten-car train to a top speed of 34 mph (55 kph). It will rise along 12th Avenue adjacent to the Wonder Wheel. Waldameer Park & Water World, Erie,
Pennsylvania, will re-introduce Whirlwind, a compact spinning coaster from SBF/Visa.
