Money well spent

LEGOLAND Windsor Resort is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, marking the occasion with its biggest investment to date - a new land and a number of new attractions. Park World contributor, Paul Young reports.

M

YTHICA: World of Mythical Creatures is a brand new LEGO IP, created for the new land at Windsor. The concept of MYTHICA is that all those wonderful creations that kids make out of LEGO using their own imagination actually come to life this new world. At LEGOLAND Windsor Resort you step through portals and find yourself in the mythical realm of your own imagination.

At the heart of the MYTHICA are three rides; one is a much loved classic reimagined and two that are entirely new.

The star attraction is undeniably Flight of the Sky Lion,

the UK’s first flying theatre. The story based attraction sees guests carried by Maximus the Sky Lion through Mythica, where riders come face to face with many weird and wonderful creatures, including an ogre taking a shower under a waterfall.

The ride hardware is supplied by Brogent and uses its M-Ride motion system, offering swing, pitch and yaw. Of course, it also offers water sprays and scent canisters to add to the ride experience. The seven gondolas each carrying up to 10 guests, COVID restrictions allowing, rotate from the station position and in to the 20m curved screen. The electric motors are near silent and offer a

smooth graceful flight experience with the right level of intensity for a family park that makes both kids and adults smile and cheer with excitement. With a 1.2m height restriction, it’s not without a couple of more thrilling moments, especially when diving over a cliff surrounded by a flock of alicorns (winged unicorns). The film was Los Angeles based Pure Imagination Studios a company that has worked on a number of media based theme park attractions, with the soundtrack coming from the musical maestros, IMAScore. It’s not often that an attraction in the UK leads to a round of applause from riders when it comes to an end but Flight of the Sky Lion leaves audiences full of emotion, with their hands clapping in appreciation of the incredible experience they’ve just had. Joining Flight of the Sky Lion is the rebranding of a double Zierer Jet Ski. It originally opened in 2000 as Wave Surfer, but now has a new look to go with the new name, Hydra’s Challenge. Perhaps the most noticeable change is the giant LEGO double-headed Hydra sticking out of the water.

The second brand new ride is Fire and Ice Freefall, a Zierer tower ride, with two towers. Gondolas rotate around the 13m towers as they bounce up and down.
