Stories from a Norweigan icon

Simworx has unveiled its latest Stargazer attraction, Hyperakselerator, at leading Norwegian theme park, Hunderfossen. Park World editor, Becci Knowles speaks to Simworx CEO, Terry Monkton to find out more about this fun, family adventure and the narrative that drives it.

It is a

fantastic ride that the Simworx team and Hunderfossen can be proud of but we’re extra proud to release this attraction in the middle of a pandemic situation!

R

eodor Felgen’s Hyperakselerator is based around the characters from the famous Norwegian author and illustrator, Kjell Aukrust’s, Flåklypa Universe. Guests accompany Solan and Ludvig, as they test out Reodor, a crazy Norwegian inventor’s solution to major climate challenges related to sustainability in the automotive and transportation industry – a totally green hydrogen fuel made by harvesting burps and farts from different animals.

The attraction consists of four of our eight-seater, Stargazers that utilise 6DOF motion simulators, which allow for a wide variety of movements – making the ride both smooth and adrenaline-inducing. The vehicles, with industrial DIY inspired theming, were designed to look like Reodor’s Hyperakselerator from the story and combine old and traditional elements to resemble something of a jet engine and a traditional Norwegian kick-sledge. The ride vehicles are positioned in front of a huge 16 metre 3D projection screen and each Stargazer is fi tted with on-board special effects - including water spray, wind and leg ticklers - and even an ‘interactive’ Hyper boost button for guests to press at the appropriate time to enhance the story’s realism.

Hunderfossen is a very traditional park that is grounded 22

in it’s Norwegian heritage and tradition. The park has a partnership with the owners of the IP behind Flåklypa which started with the construction of their Rollercoaster ‘Il Tempo Extra Gigante’ back in 2014. It has now continued paying homage to the beloved Norwegian icon, by showcasing his quirky characters and incredible storytelling in a ride that’s suitable for the whole family. The ride’s media even features a fl y-over scene of Hunderfossen’s world famous 14-metre-tall giant troll statue that ties the story’s narrative to the park’s location.

Having been in discussions with the park from around late 2019, the project kicked off as the world entered lock-down. Simworx, despite working remotely, continued developing the concepts with the park, to create a ride vehicle that was representative of the media, that was also going through story iterations by Qvisten Animation. CEO Terry Monkton explains: “For everybody involved it was a project that began very differently to ever before, utilising Zoom throughout, instead of having meetings in person with a team all working from home. But despite its challenges, the project entered the design and manufacturing stage in August/ September 2020 as our team began to return to our offi ces. This allowed us to work more collaboratively at a time that mattered most. By
