Kennywood’s Steel Curtain roller coaster makes its debut

North American editor Paul Ruben finds out what all the fuss is about T

he Steel Curtain has burst onto the scene at Kennywood Park, West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, by sending its first riders upside down nine times, more

than any other roller coaster in North America. It also boasts the world’s tallest inversion at 197 feet (60 m) high and at 220 feet (67 m) is the tallest coaster in Pennsylvania. During a media preview a group of Pittsburgh Steelers

players past and present rode it, including members of the 1970s Steelers defense that won four Super Bowls in a six- year span. Those ‘70s Steelers were led by a legendary line nicknamed The Steel Curtain, from which Kennywood’s newest record-setting roller coaster takes its name.

Big drop The Steel Curtain is the flagship attraction of the forthcoming Steelers Country at Kennywood themed land. The remaining attractions of Steelers Country will open next year. When complete the Steelers Country park experience will put Steeler fans at the centre of the action. There will be exclusive merchandise, skill games, and food locations, including a unique tailgating experience, creating the feeling of being at the stadium. Fans will be able to join in on familiar game moments by seeing how they measure up in practice drills, perfecting their touchdown dances, and checking scores and highlights on a giant video screen. “This roller coaster changes the landscape of Kennywood

completely and brings a whole new level of thrill to Southwestern Pennsylvania,” says Kennywood general manager Jerome Gibas. “Bringing together two of the region’s most iconic institutions by partnering with the Steelers puts the extra point on this touchdown of a ride. We were looking to take the theme park experience to a new level in a way that would resonate with the Pittsburgh Community. It became very clear that a potential partnership with the Steelers would be a one-of a-kind collaboration, where we could invite the Steelers team and fans to the Kennywood
