Twisted times at Kings Dominion

Wood and steel intertwine into twisting barrel roll drops, dynamic inversions and gravity-defying weightlessness on Kings Dominion’s newest hybrid roller coaster, Twisted Timbers. A taller, faster, and longer redesign of the Hurler wood coaster that first opened in 1994, the new Twisted Timbers opened at the Doswell, Virginia, park this spring. Paul Ruben has the story

F

rom Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC), Twisted Timbers is an innovative hybrid coaster that combines wood supports with a steel track to give riders an

exhilarating experience with maneuvers previously impossible on a traditional wooden coaster. “Rocky Mountain Construction was contracted to design and install an exciting experience,” explains Tony Johnson, vice president and general manager, Kings Dominion & Soak City, “that would completely transform the Hurler roller coaster into a dynamic, smooth and highly repeatable ride. Their use of the I-Box beam track design and new coaster trains definitely delivered. Our guests absolutely love the ride.”

“Since we have the patented Ibox track,” recalls Fred Grubb, RMC owner. “We were chosen as the supplier as the park wanted the coaster rebuilt using the Ibox track system. They wanted a fun exciting ride with inversions and airtime.” Features of the ride include a 109 foot (33 m) tall barrel

roll drop, 3,351 feet (1,021 m) of track, a top speed of 54 mph (87 kph), three loops, three over-banked turns, and 20 airtime moments. Guests are seated in trains consisting of six cars per train. Riders are arranged 2 across in 2 rows for a total of 24 riders per train. “Twisted Timbers delivers a different and unique experience for our guests at Kings Dominion,” reports

for a one of a kind riding experience!
