Cover Story

The VR Maze requires only a 120 square foot space

At the same time, it has to make them want to go again - to see parts of the world they didn’t see the first time round, or to get a better score.” In addition to Assassin’s Creed, the VR Maze’s expanding content library includes The Rabbids: The Big Maze, also by Ubisoft, which was launched at IAAPA’s Asia Attractions Show in 2017. This game offers an alternative narrative for participants who feel like something a bit more light-hearted than Assassin’s Creed. It immerses the user in a dynamic world populated by crazy rabbit-like creatures known as Rabbids, who spend their time causing havoc and speaking gibberish.

Conversion conundrum With ten games in the main series, a number of spin-offs and a Hollywood movie adaptation, Assassin’s Creed is one of Ubisoft’s biggest and most popular franchises. One of the key selling points of the series is its focus on exploration and adventure in highly detailed historical settings, something that Triotech and Ubisoft were keen to maintain in the adaptation of the game for the VR Maze. The game design, with its highly-detailed historical

background, aims to completely immerse participants in the world of ‘Assassin’s Creed: The Temple of Anubis’, drawing from research by leading Egyptologists and historians - not to mention a hieroglyphics-deciphering AI - to create an authentic experience of the age of Cleopatra. The gameplay begins in the centre of the Egyptian temple, Martin reveals, and the participant’s ultimate objective is to defeat the enemy and discover a way to escape. Armed with a bow and arrow, they must battle bad guys at the same time as figuring out the path through secret level changes. “It gets tougher and tougher until the end, where the player gets to do the classic Leap of Faith from the original game!” The partnership between Triotech and Ubisoft is part of the

latter’s strategy to open new doors to its rich video game worlds; reaching out to new audiences and creating immersive experiences through different mediums. Challenges posed by the shift in channels include handling a 360°, first- person perspective and crafting VR narratives, as well as working out how to condense a game as complex as Assassin’s Creed into a three-minute experience. Triotech and Ubisoft worked together on the gameplay,

Martin tells Park World. “A good video game is 80 plus hours - but you can’t have that for a one-off game. We had to compress the game into three minutes, but keep the depth of research and the accuracy.” They achieved this by making the gameplay more intuitive and simple, and less complex, than the full video game. “It’s not too frustrating, because it has to give satisfaction no matter what level the player gets to.

SEPTEMBER 2018 29

Looking ahead In other Triotech news, scalable simulator experience The Flyer™ - San Francisco will open a month after the EAS show, moving the company into the flying theatre market with a 3D film composed of both live action footage and computer-generated imagery (CGI) of the city’s iconic landmarks, sites and streets. The company will also celebrate its 350th installation worldwide at the show, including its 180th XD Dark Ride attraction in Ecuador. And with “something fairly large-scale” due to be unveiled on the show floor at IAAPA in Orlando, according to Martin, the future is bright for Triotech… we’ll see you there!
