Park Profile Baron 1898, coaster by B&M www.parkworld-online.com

Efteling

is all about storytelling, and the basis of stories is universal.

Do you find some attractions don’t translate well across country or language barriers? Efteling is all about storytelling, and the basis of stories is universal: bad battles against good, and good prevails… No need for translation here. Quirky names such as Droomvlucht or Joris en de Draak have a nice Dutch ring and make us different from other parks. Of course our restaurants use multilingual menus and our employees are trained in foreign languages. Since nobody speaks Dutch, almost all Dutch speak English, we learn it in school from a very early age.

What do you find are the most popular attractions at Efteling? That is very personal, some like the unique thrill rides such as watercoaster De Vliegende Hollander, wooden racer roller coaster Joris en de Draak or dive coaster Baron 1898, while some like the family indoor rides such as Droomvlucht, Fata Morgana or Symbolica. Our gardens and natural surroundings are highly appreciated by our guests. I would say our showcase ride is Symbolica, because it really is a next generation dark ride that fully does justice to our Efteling storytelling and thematising tradition. This attraction is themed from floor to ceiling, with many special effects but especially by making use of an infinite number of details. Symbolica really stirs the imagination of our guests.

What are the current consumer trends in the theme park market? Efteling wants to offer our visitors a personal experience and easy access to all information about the park. We are increasingly using digitalisation and technology to make this possible for our guests.

Your recently publicised the new virtual experience of Droomvlucht, which makes the ride accessible to disabled visitors - a great example to the rest of the visitor attractions sector. How do you address accessibility issues in your park for visitor with special or additional needs? Our goal is for everyone to enjoy a carefree time in our park. Many rides, all restaurants, shops and theatres have special wheelchair access, and we allow assistance or guide dogs in the park. Disabled guests can find more information about assistance at the park on our website. There will always be disabled guests visiting theme parks. That is why we seek cooperation with expert partners as well as disabled guests, to constantly improve our services. Accessibility is always taken into account for all our new development plans.

How have you found live events and seasonal special events have improved your profile and encouraged visitors? What are your expectations for your new show CARO? Live events help spread visits throughout the year, as

Efteling is open year-round. Those events bring a different experience to the park and are an extra reason to visit for our annual pass holders. With CARO we want to focus on visitors who are staying overnight at the park - more and more guests from abroad are taking short trips to Efteling, staying in one of our accommodation options

What would you say is Efteling’s company ethos? What do you want your visitors to come away thinking about their experience? At Efteling we want our visitors to be enchanted, enjoy a place to escape everyday life.

What are your plans for Efteling in 2018 and beyond? In September, our first international theatre show – CARO – will open at the Efteling Theatre, created to attract an audience from many different nationalities. We are also working very hard to prepare for the expansion of the current park by eight hectares and add a new attraction in 2020. The development plan procedures are now underway, although I cannot reveal any other details about the expansion at this time. Expanding the current park by 8 hectares is going to be a huge job, since we have to start from scratch with all basic logistical facilities.
