Park Bloggin’ Will it all go to pot?
T
he tourism industry, and the attractions and leisure activity industries in particular, will face formidable challenges with the increasing legalisation and decriminalisation of recreational marijuana, says Dr. Jack
B. Samuels, M.B.A. Canada aims to legalise nationwide recreational use later this year, and states
in the U.S. and other countries around the world are jumping on the legalisation bandwagon as the ‘neighbor has it’ effect spreads. Like casino gaming in Atlantic City in the 1970s, marijuana legalisation will
attract tourists who do not yet have legal recreational marijuana in their jurisdiction. The tantalizing tax revenues and reductions in law enforcement, court and jail costs mean that each political subdivision’s tourism industry will be competing. Marijuana legalisation raises a number of questions for the amusement and
attractions industry. for both guests and employees? is legal, can we then discriminate on pot users versus those who may have come to work hung over from alcohol use? to allow pot smoking in the existing smoking areas? stay home and indulge in home based recreation? Orlando? Perhaps Orlando will resist marijuana legalisation, just as they have managed to keep casino gaming out of the immediate area. Then again, a study by Yahoo found that 47% of all parents nationally had smoked weed in front of or with their children. They report that nearly four out of five parents think tobacco and alcohol are much greater health risks than marijuana. before the whole world goes to pot!
