Tax exemptions for South American theme parks

Brazil has started the year with good news. Its government, through the Chamber of Foreign Trade - CAMEX - authorized exemptions from equipment import taxes for five theme parks. Beach Park, Wet n ‘Wild, Blue Park, Unipraias Camboriú and Unipraias Gramado. They share the plans they will develop thanks to this tax break. Astrid González Nariño reports

he amusement parks sector in Brazil is very optimistic about the investment opportunities that may be developed this year as a result of the exemption

of import taxes on equipment such as cable cars, slides and other elements essential for the renewal of attractions offerings. It is estimated that these new tax conditions will allow a general investment of more than US$12 million. “That decision shows how the government supports the amusement park segment to boost the economy,” said Brazil’s Minister of Tourism, Marx Beltrão, adding that the incentive to purchase new equipment for the theme parks is one of the actions of the Brazil + Tourism Plan, a package of measures launched in 2017 by the authorities. The modification to import taxes for the industry is

temporary. For cableway cabins the tariff has been reduced

from 14% to zero for a period of six months, while for slides, water curtains, sprinklers and other elements in fiberglass, the tax goes down from 20% to zero for eight months. Alain Baldacci, president of the Integrated System of Parks

and Tourist Attractions, which represents 18 theme parks in Brazil, highlighted to the media the importance of the government decision and said the sector will continue to insist that the exemptions be definitive. He added that the import of state-of-the-art equipment improves infrastructure and attention to visitors. Beach Park, located in Porto das Dunas, near the city of

Fortaleza, is one of five parks that may use the exemptions. His spokesmen indicated that it is proposed to incorporate a new attraction this year, details of which will be revealed this March.

Beach Park currently has 18 major attractions, including

the famous Insano slide, which has a height of 41 meters and takes the visitor to a speed of 101 kilometers per hour in just four seconds. Other parks benefiting from the tax incentive are Unipraias Camboriú, in the state of Santa Catarina, and Unipraias in the city of Gramado, state of Rio Grande do Sul. Both offer beautiful natural scenarios that can be observed from cable cars, but the Camboriú is also characterized by the
