presence in the country. June Ko added that although IAAPA’s offices would be based in Shanghai, this wouldn’t mean the organisation would only be able to support events in that city: “We have been given ample flexibility to hold future events in other cities as well.”

An NGO of distinction A great deal of effort went into attaining the official licenses needed for IAAPA to operate as a Non-Government Organization (NGO) within Shanghai. China’s policies on this subject are very different to those of other countries – for example, only a limited number of NGOs are able to register per market niche. IAAPA Shanghai is the first of only five NGO’s within the tourism sector to be awarded this special designation. The establishment of the office came with thanks the several government bodies involved for their support, as well as that of the Shanghai Shendi Group, The

Walt Disney Company’s partner for Shanghai Disneyland. After the formalities and a ribbon cutting ceremony, a spectacular dragon dance was held to celebrate the inauguration of the office. Among the distinguished industry guests in attendance were Luke Riley, senior vice president with Village Roadshow; IAAPA’s Asia-Pacific Government Relationship Committee Chairman Mario Mamon (CEO, Enchanted Kingdom); Matthias Li (CEO, Ocean Park); Victor Danau (Asia-Pacific director with Ripley’s); Jeroen Nijpels of JNELC and Keith James, CEO with JRA. The formal event was followed by an excursion to Shanghai Disneyland, where a distinguished gathering and dinner was held at the highly exclusive and whimsical Club 33. The evening culminated attendees gathering on the Club’s private balcony overlooking the Gardens of Imagination and the Disney Castle for Shanghai Disneyland’s signature nighttime spectacular: Ignite the Dream.
