MARKET REPORT: ASIA PACIFIC

scheduled to coincide with the 2020 Olympic Games. This collaboration aims to fuse the online world of Nintendo with carefully curated physical content and interactive elements, synergising gaming and location-based entertainment.

NOTABLE INVESTMENTS IN THE PIPELINE Investment in new projects is on the rise across Asia, and existing theme parks are investing heavily in major expansions to maintain and/or improve attendance in the face of heightened regional competition. A significant number of new theme parks have already been announced, and we expect even more projects are working through the system.

International Brands: • Shanghai Disney Resort is getting ready for a second expansion, with plans to add an eighth land themed around the animated movie Zootopia – a global exclusive. Construction will commence later this year, but it is not yet known when the land will open to the public. This follows the addition of Toy Story Land in 2018 and demonstrates Disney’s ongoing confidence and commitment to the company’s future activities in China.

Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park

• Hong Kong Disneyland announced a US$1.4 billion investment in new lands and attractions to be phased in from 2018 to 2023, to ensure the park remains popular in the face of a boom in regional competition. This includes a Marvel themed area, an exclusive first in the world experience.

• Universal Beijing Resort is the highly anticipated Universal theme park being developed in the Chinese capital of Beijing. It is currently on track to open in 2020.

• Six Flags World Zhejiang will be the first Six Flags attraction in China, featuring a theme park, Hurricane Harbor Water Park, and a Six Flags Kids World children’s area. This park is expected to open in June 2020

• Nickelodeon Foshan in Guangdong province is slated to open in 2021/2022.

• Universal Studios Japan recently held a ground breaking ceremony for their new US$0.6 billion Nintendo Land, which is expected to open by 2020.

• Tokyo Disney Resort announced a major US$2.7 billion investment program to be rolled out by 2023. This includes a Beauty and the Beast themed area, a Big Hero 6 attraction, and a Minnie Mouse Design Studio.
