Michael Kreft von Byern, Rutlantica

Season Preview: EUROPE Park World provides a snapshot of what’s coming up in 2019 and beyond…

I

n a recent Park World interview we asked Michael Kreft von Byern, director of the Rulantica about current and future trends. “One of the biggest trends is the development from

regional theme park to resort destination,” he said adding that individualisation, digitalisation, the use of strong brands, IP and last but not least, sustainable operation and innovation are trends which we will see more and more in the coming years. And having taken at look at what’s coming up in Europe, we are inclined to agree.

IN THE PIPELINE Slated as the world’s largest and Russia’s only indoor theme park, Dream Island, had been predicted to open by the end of 2018. Located on the Moscow River shore some 10 minute-drive away from the Kremliin, it is now expected to open this year with, according to the official website, “eight recreated fairytale worlds of cartoon characters; various amusement activities for visitors of all ages, including 29 unusual attractions; concert hall within the

theme park with holographic and interactive shows” and unique media attractions. Opening later this year, Rulantica, the new Europa-Park

water world will cover 32,600 square metres and feature nine Nordic areas, a theme which will also extend to the new hotel ‘Krønasår – The Museum Hotel’ on site. Visitors will be able to enjoy 25 attractions, among them 17 water slides from the Canadian slide manufacturer ProSlide and from the German-based manufacturer Aquarena. The Wave, an indoor water park, in the UK will open in the

spring for a number of test events in readiness for a full public launch early in the summer 2019, according to the local the local council. Coventry Sports Foundation is behind the new water park that has been under construction since 2017. The official website states that the attraction will include six

high-octane slides; the UK’s biggest wave pool, churning 20 million litres of water everyday, a relaxing beach café, lazy river and a luxurious spa.
