AUGUST GAMING REVENUE RISES 12.2 PCT TO MOP22.16 BN, IN NEW POST- PANDEMIC HIGH

Macau casinos raked in a total of MOP22.16 billion (USD 2.76 billion) in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in August, representing a 12.2 per cent year-on-year increase, according to figures released by the city’s gaming regulator. Last month’s figure also sets a new post-pandemic high, surpassing the MOP22.13 billion recorded in July. Data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) indicates that in the first eight months of 2025, GGR totalled MOP160.13 billion (USD 20.3 billion), 7.2 per cent higher than in the same period last year and representing 82.3 per cent of the total recorded in the January–August period of pre-pandemic 2019.

CABO VERDE AIMS TO RESOLVE STALLED MACAU LEGEND CASINO-RESORT DISPUTE THIS YEAR

Cabo Verde’s Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, has told public broadcaster TDM that the stalled Macau Legend casino-resort project in the capital, Praia, remains unresolved, with authorities aiming to reach a definitive agreement with the investor later this year. In November 2024, the government ordered the reversal of the project and the return of ownership to the state, citing repeated violations by the company. At the time, the Cabo Verdean government stressed that it had given Macau Legend “every opportunity to resume work or to negotiate the sale of its shares or the transfer of its contractual position to a potential party interested in continuing the project,” but no alternatives had been presented.

Macau Legend announced it would challenge the government’s decision regarding the unfinished hotel-casino in Praia. In a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the company said it “intends to vigorously contest these allegations in order to safeguard the interests of the company and its shareholders.”

ASIA PIONEER RETURNS TO PROFIT IN H1 INCOME

Asia Pioneer Entertainment Holdings saw its first-half revenue rise by 15.7 per cent to HK$23 million (US$2.95 million/ MOP23.67 million) group-wide from the same period a year earlier.

According to an unaudited announcement, the gaming equipment provider’s gross profit climbed to HK$10.9 million over the same period, lifting its gross profit margin to 47.5 per cent from 47.3 per cent as a result.

On operating expenses, there was a growth of 6.8 per cent, with the H1 2025 figure at HK$11 million.

The Hong Kong-listed company said that higher staff costs and travel expenses had pushed up spending during that period.

At a Council of Ministers meeting, officials said the company, led by businessman David Chow, had “flagrantly and repeatedly violated its obligations,” leaving no option but to reclaim control.
