GrandWest Invests over R2.5-Million in Local Schools
Christmas came early for four local schools who received new facilities ranging from classrooms to kitchens, dining areas and ablution blocks valued at R2.5-million, all courtesy of GrandWest. A fifth school received financial support for their nutrition programme.
The donation forms part of GrandWest’s ongoing commitment in education, “We believe that for South Africa to prosper socially and economically, it is crucial to support schools by giving them the tools they need. Many of the schools we support are located in areas where poverty is rife, so they receive no fees, and parents battle to even put food on the tables for their families. Every donation we make to one of these schools is a step towards equipping our children with essential knowledge and skills while also taking pressure off families,” said GrandWest General Manager, Mervyn Naidoo.
At Pinedene Primary School in Ravensmead, GrandWest collaborated with Breadline Africa to construct a new classroom and dining area worth R776 314.26. The dual-medium school, which was built in 1956, relies solely on a subsidy from the Western Cape Education Department for its Grade R to Grade 7 learners. By 2023 the school had enrolled 1 143 learners, mostly from the Mfuleni area. Following a visit to the school in 2023 to
hand over R205 844.63 worth of stationery for foundation phase learners it was apparent that school had even greater needs. The project to assist the school was expanded to include a 20m2 modular kitchen plus a 60m2 dining area. Working with structural engineers, the kitchen and dining area now contain internal and external lighting, access to power, plumbing, geysers and all necessary cooking appliances and equipment, tables and chairs. Safety gates have also been installed to protect the equipment.
