T

he gas industry’s annual campaign to promote gas safety across the UK is set to take place from 9th to 15th September 2024. This year’s theme, ‘Checking - Every Check Counts’,

emphasises the importance of regular gas safety checks and other proactive measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of households. Gas Safety Week is a collaborative eff ort by the

gas industry, businesses and organisations to raise awareness about the dangers of poorly maintained gas appliances, which can cause gas leaks, fi res, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. This year’s campaign aims to educate the public on the signifi cance of every gas safety check, no matter how big or small.

Free toolkit This year’s theme encompasses a wide range of gas safety-related messages that can be tailored to various audiences. These include reminders to book an annual gas safety check, to ensure that the engineer is Gas Safe registered and qualifi ed for the work, to know what to do in a gas emergency, to check that the landlord has provided a current gas safety record and to test the carbon monoxide (CO) alarm.

The 2024 Gas Safety Week toolkit is packed with

a variety of resources, such as social media assets (including Welsh language versions), leafl ets, posters and images, making it easier for installers and their businesses to support the campaign and make a positive impact in their communities. Installers can download the free toolkit from the Gas Safety Week website, with everything you need to easily take part in this initiative. Jonathan Samuel, chief executive offi cer for

Gas Safe Register, says: “The week will encourage checking, in many guises, and shine a light on the importance gas safety in keeping ourselves and our community safe. Throughout Gas Safety Week, our partners, stakeholders and Gas Safe Register will share information to help everyone be gas safe, so I am very pleased to have the support of installers to help share those messages.”

Every check counts – Day by day To help you plan for the week, each day of Gas Safety Week has a dedicated theme:

Monday: Are you gas safe? Monday asks if you are gas safe. Big or small, every check is important for safety, and Gas Safe Register acts as a resource for both installers and their customers to provide the information they need.

Tuesday: Be risk aware Unsafe gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide. CO can’t be seen, smelled or tasted, so it’s important to have a working CO alarm installed correctly

Wednesday: Landlords and tenants must act responsibly Check if your landlord has provided a current gas safety record and organised an annual gas safety check.

Thursday: Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer Illegal fitters can put you at risk. Check the official gas Safe Register to see if your engineer is legally registered and qualified to do the work.

Friday: Make sure friends and family are gas safe aware Check in on loved ones and remind them to book an annual gas safety check with a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer.

Saturday: Do not do any gas-related DIY When doing DIY, check for gas pipes before drilling or hammering and leave any direct gas work to the Gas Safe experts.

Sunday: Be prepared for winter It’s particularly important to stay aware of vital gas safety advice as we go into the winter months. Check that appliances have a crisp blue flame, vents are not blocked, and the CO alarm is working.
