WORKSHOP

“So when we did, I was very, very chuffed.” And Cytech has maintained this momentum into 2024. “In reverse of the traditional cycling calendar, Cytech workshops are generally busier during winter and quieter during summer, for the obvious reason that as businesses are busy in the summer months, they don’t necessarily pull their staff out of their workshops into training,” says Harrison. “So over the winter, we still saw a really good uplift in training, which is positive to report. “I think it reflects the general market trends with the service and repair side of the business being ever important, especially for IBDs. For many, it was the one element of business that was still performing well, as opposed to retail.” Many in the trade may be surprised or are unaware of how closely the ACT and Cytech are intertwined. Established more than 30 years ago by the ACT, Cytech’s relationship with the trade body is symbiotic and crucial for advancing bike technician training “As a leading provider of technical education, Cytech significantly benefits from ACT’s expertise and support, ensuring that our training programmes stay at the cutting edge of industry standards,” explains Harrison. “This partnership not only bolsters the credibility and effectiveness of our certification process but also enhances our capacity to cultivate a skilled and knowledgeable workforce within the cycling industry.

“The synergy is vital for maintaining high standards in training and adapting to the evolving needs of both technicians and the broader cycling community.” Additionally, ACT Gold members enjoy several valuable
Cytech benefits, including 10% off Cytech practical training, up to 50% off the online theory course, and the opportunity to promote their businesses as Cytech Accredited.
Expansion and maintaining standards Cytech currently has multiple training sites across England and Scotland, and its scope is international with locations also in Australia, South Africa, and Canada.
In April, a new partnership was announced with The Rediscovery Centre, the National Centre for the Circular Economy in Ireland, marking the company’s first European site outside of the UK. “Opening a dedicated training centre in Ireland marked a significant milestone for Cytech as we expand our presence in the European market,” comments Harrison. “Finding the right partner was essential, and we believe the Rediscovery Centre is the perfect match. “We’re particularly pleased to now offer Cytech courses within Ireland, a development we’re confident will be well- received by the Irish bike trade.” Launching a new centre always requires significant effort, particularly in quality control and training the trainers.
