SQUARING THE CIRCLE

Simon Cox speaks to Pete Collard from eBike Motor Centre about the realities of e-bike motors and the importance of repair over replace

C

hatting with Pete Collard from the eBike Motor Centre is an eye-opening experience. Few (if any) have seen the inside of as many e-bike

motors, from so many brands. We caught up with him following Eurobike, aiming to

make formal and engaging conversation in need of much greater visibility amongst e-bike motor manufacturers, bike brands, distributors and the riding public.

Pete, let’s start with the big one – Cost. How much does a dead e-bike motor cost to get it working again?

If it can be repaired – if the spare parts are available – we see motors returned to customers for between £50 and £250.

£450 to £500 is a big bill. We see it occasionally if major parts are required. Most come in somewhere around £200 to £250.

For many, that’s going to come as a big, positive, surprise.

That’s the thing. The current: “My motor is dead, how much is a new one?” narrative needs loudly challenging. Making a service costs comparison, if you ride a full- suspension MTB you could easily see that kind of bill for a fork and shock service. Add replacing bushings and bearings in the linkage, and your e-bike motor repair now looks, in comparison, good value. As a business, we’ve seen motors from almost every

brand. www.bikebiz.com
