types of road bike or race bikes, then we would look at refurbishing that to sell here at our warehouse to help cover the cost of running our operation, but that’s only a very small percentage of what we do. “The majority – around 80% – of the bikes we get in are suitable and we send them to Africa.” And which types of bikes are the most suitable for Re- Cycle’s partners? “We get a huge amount of kids bikes coming through which is great, but the most popular bike and the most requested by our partners is a 26-inch wheel mountain bike,” says Ward.
“They’re so robust and the whole family can use them.” If a bike is beyond economic repair, then it will be broken down for spare parts which can be used and sent to Africa to help with maintenance. Beyond just sending bikes, Re-Cycle also helps to equip locals with additional tools and skills to look after them. No matter where you are in the world, a puncture is a puncture and without the relevant knowledge to tackle it, it is a daunting task. “We work closely with our partners to provide training out
there to mechanics and local repairers,” explains Wards. “We [also] run Cycle to School programmes with our partners, especially in Ghana, Sierra Leone and The Gambia.
