I come from a background which saw me grow up working on cars. Nobody says they need a new ZF 8-speed gearbox because it has developed a fault. Parts are available, and accredited and skilled
technicians assess the fault, identify the parts, and carry out a repair. Why is it any different for an e-bike motor? If consumer safety is cited as a concern, why is certifying an e-bike technician any more challenging than getting CORGI registration to work on gas boilers?
So parts availability is a challenge for you? Regrettably, yes. Both parts and software. Some motor manufacturers simply don’t, and won’t, speak with us (or any other skilled repair centres). In the auto industry, it’s inconceivable that this would happen.
What’s doubly frustrating is that, as an engineering and service business, we have developed, tested, and installed fixes for a host of well-known problems. Fixes and improvements during a product’s production
lifecycle are surely an integral part of ongoing product development. Why would a motor manufacturer not want to know about these things? brand of e-bike motor, once outside of warranty, that they openly tell friends and customers not to buy a bike with a certain motor fitted. My question to e-bike motor manufacturers is: “Why would you not support a professional company that has been repairing your motors for the last six years without issue?”
What do you do when a motor manufacturer won’t support repairs? Motors classed as unrepairable are a valuable source of learning and spare parts.
