Daniel Blackham speaks to Strava CEO Michael Martin and chief business officer Zipporah Allen about the brand’s latest developments and why ‘building for her’ is building for all

trava has quickly developed into one of the largest online platforms in the world. Founded 14 years ago as a means to track activity


data, it has grown to incorporate several social network features and boasts a user network of more than 125 million people across 190 countries, accumulating in excess of 10 billion activities.


But how do these numbers break down to cycling, and where does the UK rank among others?


“The UK remains one of our strongest markets,” explains Michael Martin, Strava’s CEO who was appointed in December 2023.

Strava users. In France, since 2020, the number of Strava users has tripled. In Spain, it’s only slightly behind that, growing twice-over since 2020.” “We now support 50 different activity types, 50 different


sports. A lot of people still think of Strava as a cycling app, but cycling is no longer the most predominant sport on Strava, it’s running and walking is coming up really quickly [as well]. As a self-confessed “data nerd”, Martin enjoys digging into these trends to understand what is happening. And where. Despite cycling no longer being the platform’s predominant sport, it still leads in other areas.
