Chris & Liz Scott, Owners, The Black Lab
“2025 has been a bit of a rollercoaster! We have grown nicely as a small, independent business, though it remains a tough environment. It’s always a little unsettling when you see turbulence among the big-name brands, but for us, becoming a genuinely trusted partner for our customers has been key. We’ve brought in several carefully chosen niche brands this year, and it’s been brilliant to see how well they’ve been received.
On the coaching side, we expected demand to soften as the cost of living continued to bite. Instead, people have stayed determined to keep fit, stay healthy and chase their goals - which has been inspiring to watch. Looking ahead, we’re excited for 2026.”

“We started the year with a BBC Panorama hit on electric bikes and may be ending it with a change to the cycle to work scheme, perhaps just not the one most of us would have advocated for. It’s never plain sailing in the bike trade, but I’m pleased to hear from the BA that we have had six months of consecutive growth and there are standout segments like e-MTB and cargo creating opportunities again. In visiting my local bike shop this week, I was pleased to hear optimism on sales and footfall again for e-bikes. Now all we need is a catalyst from the Government, as France had with its subsidy, and the market could finally shift gears. With the return on investment cycling delivers, the chancellor would be mad not to take our sector seriously.”
