“Membership of the CBA includes access to advice from experts on a wide range of topics including employment law and health and food safety, as well as online training and networking opportunities”

What challenges has the bakery industry faced and how are we seeing steps to meet them? Energy costs are still the top of the CBA’s agenda, as without clarity again from government on who will benefit from the latest support package, I feel our members frustration on not being heard on how devastating this cost is to the baking industry. Ingredient costs and business rates are also an area of concern to the membership and one therefore that we are monitoring closely.

Part of our role is to ensure the future of the industry and that means making sure that there is a continual stream of qualified new bakers entering the sector. We work with all the bakery schools around the country to support the bakers of tomorrow and look forward to welcoming some to the Business Day in June. What has been your most memorable experience in your career and why?

There have been way too many memorable experiences during my time at the CBA to single out just one – but if I had to choose, I think it would be my recent appointment as chief executive. For me this is the culmination of 23 years working with this amazing industry and I am really excited about the next phase – though I can’t promise it will be another quarter of a century!

There have been a few key milestones over the years that standout because of their importance to the members and industry overall. For example, I am very proud of the part the CBA played in overturning the VAT on hot food and when it comes to events, our 125th anniversary where 700 guests helped the CBA celebrate stands out – though I am sure our forthcoming Business Day will also be up there! One of the favourite parts of my job is visiting members and supporters, who never cease to inspire and impress me. Whether they are a family baker with one shop or twenty shops or produce bread and bakery for wholesale, every visit is always memorable for the skill, passion and commitment to our sector. And of course, I get to taste some of the fabulous products – an essential part of any visit! And last but not least, the enthusiasm of the team at the CBA for our industry and the work the CBA carries out on behalf of its members.

What does a day in your job role look like? The one thing I can promise is that no day looks the same – which I love! The CBA is there to serve members – so whilst I have many tasks that I need to do each week, when the phone rings or an email pings in, it’s vital that the team responds promptly to support that member with whatever their issue or question is.
