Passion for success ActionCOACH turns pet project to profitable business

profitability of their clients’ businesses, they help business owners access greater freedom. Sean Purcell launched his ActionCOACH franchise in Colchester in 2017 and it wasn’t long before he was making a difference with a variety of extraordinary businesses. One client caught Sean’s attention
straight away. HayPigs! designs and produces enrichment toys for guinea pigs and other small animals and when Sean met with owner, Rik Cridland, the pair clicked instantly and started coaching sessions almost immediately. Rik needed guidance on how to take his business to the next level, but what he received was so much more.

First steps Rik says: “I didn’t want HayPigs! to be in the 80 per cent of businesses that collapse in the first five years. I’d completely undervalued the power of having my vision and mission clearly aligned and Sean reassured me that everything would start to fall into place once I realised the core values of my business. He made me seriously think about why I was in business in the first place and so I refined my vision statement to one clear sentence. “One of the most powerful things we
learn from ActionCOACH is working on the business and not in it. Sean’s goal was to change my mindset and help me see I should be creating a business I can sell … it’s about having the processes and systems in place so the business can run profitably without me being present.”

The results After the first 12 months of coaching, HayPigs! increased turnover by 200 per cent on its previous year and website sales were up 300 per cent. Rik’s faith in HayPigs! was on the rise too. He says: “I actually get a kick out of a well- organised spreadsheet, something I wouldn’t have imagined a couple of years ago! As well as increasing UK sales, we’re now looking at expanding into the US, something that would have seemed daunting prior to ActionCOACH. “I’ve always been keen to get the
work-life balance right and you’ll very rarely find me working weekends now as my time management has improved massively. My wife Helen and I have had to make sacrifices over the past few years, but now we’re able to plan two-week holidays, which was impossible before. ActionCOACH taught me – and I feel confident in knowing – that my business can work without me.” Sean is thrilled to help celebrate Rik’s
success – which was recognised in 2019 when HayPigs! won Best Retailer at the
