many entrepreneurial individuals embrace the challenge of running their own business, while providing ongoing support and a tried-and-tested model. Each Subway store is individually owned and operated by franchise owners who are members of their community, committed to contributing to their local economy. Could you join them? Neil Dale has been in catering

management since he left university in 2001, working for many well-known high- street brands, including Subway. In 2018, Neil became the proud owner of his first Subway store, having decided it was time to run his own business after working for other people. After researching franchising, it was obvious to Neil which food franchise he wanted to own.

"It's a huge buzz – when everything is going great this is a dream job"

Neil says: “After years of running stores

for others, I decided it was time to do it for myself. I knew how robust the Subway system was, and how much support is provided. Thanks to my experience working for them, I felt like I had already been trained to do the job. With a brand as strong as Subway, I knew I would be in the ideal position from day one. “Subway has fantastic buying power,

we get great deals being part of a bigger brand, something small businesses can only dream of. I wanted to hit the ground running, establishing a business can be tough, buying into a strong established brand would mean my store would be busy from the get go.”

p Neil Dale In 2017, Subway introduced a new

Fresh Forward store design, offering guests an enhanced and modern Subway experience, with clean lines and guest- focused touches, such as digital menu boards, special displays for cookies, bread baked in store and freshly cut vegetables. Neil knew he wanted his first store to

carry the new design. saying: “Having Fresh Forward décor means that from the start my store is future proofed for at least the next 10 years.” Like all new Subway franchise owners,

Neil attended a two-week training course at the Subway Support Centre in Cambridge, but the support, help and guidance doesn’t stop there. As Neil says: “From the outset you are looked after. The Business Development Agents don’t do it all for you, but they certainly guide you in the right way. “The Business Development Office

will help you find an opportunity and see it all the way through to build and

completion. After the initial few weeks the Business Development Agents are always at the end of the phone to help.” Neil has ambitious plans to open

another store in the next 18 months. He recommends owning a Subway franchise to anyone, and has the following advice: “Do your research, and once you have done it, do it again. The good days are a huge buzz, and when everything is going great this is a dream job. I’m a firm believer that if you work hard it pays off, so anyone heading into franchising should know that you have to work hard, but the achievement is immense.” 
