FRANCHISE ADVICE
FRANCHISE ADVICE
Now is the right time
Casting an eye over the current landscape and its future prospects, Nick Williams finds himself striking an upbeat note (and says Henry Ford had it right!)
I
don’t know whether you have noticed in these weeks of lockdown just how many inspirational messages have
appeared in emails and on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn feeds? In difficult times humankind has sought to help others through their mental turmoil, doubts, challenges and worries. Those messages have been offered in support and have provided comfort, and some direction.
So here is one for the future. One of the many things Henry Ford is credited with saying is: “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re probably right.” What did he mean by that? Simply that much of our destiny is shaped by our own mental attitude and beliefs. It means you yourself determine your own success or failure. If you think you will succeed somehow you will find a way
to do it. More than ever we will need a positive approach to life as we come out of lockdown into a changed world. Many businesses will be mortally
wounded or severely damaged during these long weeks of lockdown, economically speaking, and people will find themselves, through no fault of their own, redundant… and, reading this, you may be one of them. I’ve been in franchising for over 20
years and seen several downturns and throughout those, franchising always comes to the fore. Many people will be reluctant to go
back into an employed situation – if they can find one – because they would prefer to have control of their own destiny with the future in their hands. They will want to do something that is, potentially, in a sector that is virus resistant and want to work in a business that is less risky economically than the one they were in before. It may also be very important to have greater working flexibility – for
example, you may not be able to return to full activity simply because of family commitments.
What next? During the pandemic, would-be franchisees, and would-be franchisors, have been talking to us about “The New World” and want to be ready for it. So, for prospective franchisees (and
potential franchisors as well) some advice that’s always sound in relation to franchising, but more so now than ever: y Understand what franchising is. It’s not buying a job that gives you work. It’s investing in your own business you work hard at, while using the proven successful model of an established brand.
