Women in Franchising

How has your work-life balance changed? When I was in nursing, I used to work really long hours and usually felt like I was doing it for nothing. Now, all of that energy is being put towards growing the business. When we launched we said

to ourselves: “Wouldn’t it be amazing to help 50 people?” We must have helped over 500 now. I do work long hours, but I have a good amount of time off, too. I’ve found a better balance in recent years and I make time for myself.

How have you found being a woman running her own business? Initially, my own lack of self-confi dence held me back. It felt strange to me – going from being a nurse to suddenly being a director of my own company in what I wrongly assumed was a man’s world. Now, I revel in the success of running my own care business and it’s extremely rewarding to rub shoulders with other incredible female business owners!

What qualities do franchisees need to be a successful franchisee? Be passionate. Take a committed approach and do your due diligence. You need to be a good communicator and pick up the phone to prospective clients and local authorities.

Would you recommend this franchise opportunity to women in particular? Yes, 100 per cent. I’ve made good friends among other female directors and there are other female franchisees from within the network that I could happily pick up the phone to if the going got tough. Women make marvellous franchisees; we are very supportive of each other and cut across formality with ease.

Any other advice for aspiring franchisees? Be prepared to work hard. Speak with your family about the strain this new challenge could put on the household – growing a business is a challenge. But enjoy your business and be proud of it. l
