Women in Franchising

HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE

Fahima Khatun is the director of Home Instead Senior Care Canary Wharf, which she bought four years ago when she was just 26.

What did you do before franchising and what prompted you to make the change? My background is in mechanical engineering. After my master’s degree I went on to work as head of business development for a homeware distributor, which I enjoyed but I didn't feel satisfied or fulfilled by my work. I had always wanted to start my own business. I began looking into options and franchising seemed ideal for me. When I discovered Home Instead Senior Care, it was a revelation! The fulfilling and rewarding career I wanted was set out in front of me, with an achievable career path doing something I loved – caring for others.

Why did you choose Home Instead? Home Instead ticked all my boxes and I knew right away that it was the business for me. Family is very important to me and I come from a family culture where we place great importance on caring for the elderly. I really wanted to make a difference to peoples’ lives. Through my Home Instead franchise I can help people to live independent and fulfilling lives without age becoming a barrier. I loved what Home Instead stood for. I

wanted to care for my community. I also wanted a successful business, so Home Instead's robust business model stood out.

What was your experience of setting up a franchise? The support provided by the Home Instead franchise development team was incredible! They were able to provide me

with all the expertise and practical training I needed. Three years on, my business has

exceeded all my expectations. I feel I can safely say that I am a respected employer, doing important work for the community in which I was raised. I’m proud of that. I still value the ongoing support and training provided by Home Instead national office and from my peers, who regularly share best practice.

Would you recommend Home Instead to other women?

Without a doubt. I use many of the transferable skills I picked up before I moved into the care sector, I'm making a difference in my community and I am able to offer rewarding, flexible employment opportunities.

What qualities do franchisees need to be successful in your sector? As a franchise owner, you will work hard in the early days, but, as this is a management franchise, that changes and you will take on the role of overseeing and directing the business. Of course, providing care and

companionship for older people is so rewarding and you need to genuinely care. A Home Instead franchisee would never compromise on the care they provide for profit.
