FRANCHISEFOCUS IN V ESTMENT: FROM £25 ,000 Get in the spirit
With low entry fee and royalties, Il Gusto’s ‘à la carte’ franchise model is worth exploring
Gusto has tapped into the market and created a new ‘à la carte’ franchise model. The concept is to give franchisees the opportunity to work from three to seven months during the busiest retail months of the year – making a quick profit without having to commit full time. Il Gusto was founded in 2000 by entrepreneur Richard Mosconi and is an established retailer selling an array of high- quality oils, balsamic vinegars, premium liqueurs, exclusive spirits – all directly from the cask to make perfect personalised unusual gifts. Il Gusto currently operates five company-
W
owned sites and three franchise shops, as well as 15 seasonal kiosks for Christmas, successfully trading in 15 shopping centres nationwide over the last three years.
"For anyone looking to work and run a business for half a year or less, Il Gusto’s model is the perfect investment"
Richard noted that nearly 50 per
cent of business is undertaken during Christmas and wanted to create a seasonal offering for franchisees – an ‘à la carte’ concept focused around pop-up shops and kiosks in busy shopping malls and popular department stores . This allows franchisees to make the most of the opportunity to invest in a business during a commercially valuable time frame, receiving the same level of training and support that a full-time franchsee would, but as an ‘à la carte’ franchisee. With a low entry fee, low royalty, low initial investment (£25,000), and a high
profit margin (52.5 per cent), profits are maximised, while costs are kept to a minimum. For anyone looking to work and run a business for half a year or less, Il Gusto’s model is the perfect investment. Richard says: “I think this concept is
very much of the time. For many people, the opportunity to work profitably on a basis that is effectively part time is highly attractive. Seasonality and personalisation are two key trends that support the potential success of any franchisee with a relatively low level of investment.” In order to streamline the process of setting up, this year Il Gusto has researched and secured 100 prime locations across the UK for franchisees to select from and will continue to offer ongoing support to any applicants by helping to secure sites. All leases are signed directly through Il Gusto to keep the process as simple as possible for all investors.
Along with help securing the site,
Il Gusto will also provide options for either rental or purchase of equipment, supply of the first delivery of stock, full management and sales training, marketing support and help obtaining funding providing
the ultimate support along the way. Il Gusto has already run successful trials
of the new business model – and last Christmas, from October to December, operated 15 pop-up kiosks in centres like Manchester, Newcastle, Cardiff, Glasgow and Nottingham. All kiosks had great feedback and operated profitably. Due to this success, Il Gusto is launching at least 20 more pop-up kiosks designed to be run on a franchise basis. Il Gusto’s brands are ideally suited to seasonal shopping and Richard hopes that franchisees will extend from running a singular pop-up to managing a series in the same region, encouraging growth and avoiding fragmentation. l
