“There are more than 160 franchisees, who operate over 900 McDonald’s restaurants”

they are a good fit for McDonald’s. If successful, applicants will undergo a minimum of nine months’ full-time training both in the restaurant and the classroom. As a franchisee, you’ll be responsible for the growth and profitability of your business, as well as managing and recruiting your own team. Investing in a McDonald’s restaurant is a 20-year commitment – its therefore looking for people who are willing to put in the time and effort, which is why its training programme is so thorough. McDonald’s gives franchisees complete access to the business by placing them in one of the restaurants, training them as a crew member and allowing them to progress to restaurant management. This way, franchisees get to see the business they will be operating first hand, as well as understand customers’ and employees’ needs. McDonald’s franchisees come from all walks of life, and while you don’t need experience in the food industry, it’s important that you have the ability, passion and determination needed to lead your business and team. Although this will be your business, you won’t be alone. Each franchisee is allocated a franchisee consultant, and these have, on average, 20 years’ experience with McDonald’s. The consultants are on hand to support franchisees and offer guidance and support to help optimise sales and profitability while keeping standards high. You’ll be joining McDonald’s on its journey as it continuously evolves to meet its customers’ needs, whether that’s through updating and modernising the restaurants or committing to improving the menu. Since 1993, it has reduced the saturated fat content of its cooking oil by 83 per cent and, today, 89 per cent of the core menu contains fewer

than 500kcal. As well as this, McDonald’s regularly introduces new food items to the menu, including products like the premium Signature range and wraps, to ensure it remains true to its vision of being a modern, progressive burger company. McDonald’s is passionate about giving back and its

franchisees work hard to build strong relationships within the areas they operate. Franchisees often work with anti-litter charities, including Keep Britain Tidy and its Love Where You Live campaign, to help keep local surroundings litter free. Across the UK, the restaurant teams carry out regular litter patrols and cover 150,000 miles per store, picking up all types of litter every year. Many franchisees also sponsor their local

grassroots football teams, providing free kit and equipment. Over 175,000 new kits have currently been delivered to teams and this is all down to the franchisees. As well as this, franchisees work closely with McDonald’s’ corporate charity, Ronald McDonald House Charities, and arrange fundraisers and events to raise money. The restaurant teams and customers are local people so it’s important to provide communities with positive investment and offer customers a fantastic experience. For prospective franchisees looking for a

franchisor, it’s important to do your research. A good franchisor will support you both in starting your business and growing it, so check their credentials, operating costs and whether any training is provided. It’s also worth checking to see if a franchisor has a British Franchise Association membership, as this ensures the franchised business has been measured against a code of ethical franchising standards.
