cDonald’s enjoyed a record-breaking year in 2016. In October, it celebrated 42 consecutive quarters of growth,


as well as 30 years of franchising. The 110,000 employees across the McDonald’s UK system served a record-breaking number of customers – over one billion to be precise – and it continued its biggest ever transformation programme. McDonald’s is now over halfway through its


deployment programme, by digitally transforming its restaurants and delivering exciting new changes. The Experience of the Future programme focuses on providing customers with more choice as to how they order and pay, while adapting how the food is prepared and served. Some of these changes include

new interior designs and layouts, self-order kiosks, wireless charging docks and improved facilities. The transformations have been extremely well


received by both employees and customers, and, in recognition of this work, McDonald’s was presented with the Award for Innovation at the 2016 bfa HSBC Franchisor of the Year Awards. A restaurant is currently being transformed every day with the entire estate expected to be upgraded in 2018. This success wouldn’t be possible without McDonald’s franchisees. A decade ago, 35 per cent of the McDonald’s UK network was franchised; today, that number has more than doubled to over 70 per cent. There are more than 160 franchisees, who operate over 900 McDonald’s restaurants, and


the McDonald’s network continues to grow. For those contemplating franchising, being a


franchisee at McDonald’s is a great opportunity to start your own business, while being supported by a larger, more-established organisation. Franchisees are able to take advantage of McDonald’s’ business model, supply chain logistics, research and development, while also having access to support and training that an owner of a non-franchised smaller business may not. Franchisees are able to invest in a brand that is trusted by customers and has proven and sophisticated systems. Applicants will undertake a number of interviews and an in-restaurant evaluation to determine whether franchising is a good fit for them and that
