EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
In the pulsating realm of electronic music, 2023 has been a remarkable year, especially for the talented Álvaro Medina. His expe- riences, from mesmerizing gigs to innovative releases, not only highlight his musical journey but also give us a peek into the evolving landscape
of electronic music. THE HIGHLIGHTS
What has been your most memorable performance in 2023, and what made it special?
“This year has been one of my best, and it’s hard to choose just one performance, but I must mention two. The first was at Pyramid Ibiza and Oasis Gran Canaria, sharing the stage with Ricardo Villalobos for the first time. It was a significant moment for me, especially as I had the opportunity to meet him in person and give him some of my latest vinyls. The lineup that day was luxurious, featuring Raresh, Franco Cineli, Priku, Maher Daniel, and Mar-t. I would like to make a special mention of my great friend Nacho Capella, who is very much to blame for the fact that I have been able to live this experience and many other such special ones. And for always trusting in my work. My second notable gig was my first time at
the legendary Club der Visionär in Berlin, a magical place where playing was a dream come true.”
RECENT RELEASES: A NEW SONIC CHAPTER
Can you tell us about your most recent releases and how they differ previous work?
from your
“I’m particularly proud of my latest tracks, ‘Stay Alive’ released by Moan and ‘Everywhere’ by HOWL. ‘Stay Alive’ has been doing well in my sets, receiving great feedback from artists like Tania Vulcano, who played it at Cicoloco in DC10 Ibiza. Nicole Moudaber also selected it for her radio show, Mood Radio. ‘Everywhere’ is another track I’m satisfied with;
effective on the dance floor and featured in va- rious parties and clubs throughout the year.”
UPCOMING RELEASES: EXCITING COLLABORATIONS ON THE HORIZON
Are there any
collaborations that you’re particularly excited about?
upcoming projects or
“Yes, I’m looking forward to the next release on my label with Enzo Leep Matahari, our third reference. The repress of the second reference has been one of the top-selling on Deejay this year. I’m also preparing a release with my friend and admired artist, the French Djebali. Collaborating with artists whose work I’ve followed for a long time is incredible. There’s also a planned release with my good friends JNJS, Jay Nortown, and Jacobo Saavedra. I’m proud of the sound they’re producing and their evolution over
the years. Additionally, it’s been
I’m eager for a special record to come out on h24 musique label, featuring three original tracks and a remix by the Ukrainian producer Silat Beski. And, a track will be released on my friend Chad Andrew’s Coast2coast label, a label I’ve always admired for its hip-hop influences.”
2024 SOUTH AMERICA TOUR: HIGH EXPECTATIONS
What are your expectations for your South America tour in 2024?
“It’s my second time in South America after my first visit to Peru and Colombia last month. I was particularly impressed with Medellín, Co- lombia, for its vibrant music scene and passio- nate people. In January, I’m fortunate to return, this time to Argentina, Chile, Colombia again with an exciting project with Jazzy, Panama, and possibly other countries still in discussion.”
MUSICAL INFLUENCES: FROM ROOTS TO EVOLUTION
How have your Hip Hop
sounds in Minimal, influenced your
roots in Soul, Funky, current
Techno, and House?
“Growing up, I attended hip-hop and rock concerts, seeing artists like Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Rolling Stones, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Marilyn Manson, Snoop Dog, Africa Bambaataa, Cypress Hill, Mos Def, and Psycho Realm. While I never got to see Nirvana, Michael Jackson, 2pac, or Notorious B.I.G., I’ve always been fascinated by music history and the evolution of different styles. Understan- ding the history and evolution of music has significantly influenced my productions and DJ sets, where I often incorporate versions or originals inspired by these influential artists.”
CREATIVE PROCESS IN THE STUDIO: MAINTAINING A UNIQUE AND FRESH SOUND
What process do you follow in the studio to keep your sound unique and fresh?
“I always try to stay up-to-date with the latest sounds while being true to my style. Music constantly evolves, and I always aim to renew myself.”
SUPPORT FROM RENOWNED ARTISTS: IMPACT ON YOUR CAREER
How has the support of renowned artists influenced your career?
“Learning from artists who have influenced me has always been important. I frequent- ly send my music to my favorite artists or those I’m connected with. Many have played and supported my music, which has helped me progress, gain confidence, and feel incredibly satisfied seeing such important artists playing my music.
