FROM HYBRID TO TECHNO
In 2015, HI-LO emerged, a beacon of shadowy beats and bass-heavy grooves. Inspired by the likes of Eric Prydz’s alter ego Cirez D, HI-LO was born to forge a path into the heart of the Techno world. Tiesto and Skrillex, intrigued by the darker tracks, advised Oliver to release them under his well-known alias. However, Oliver’s intuition led him to unfurl HI-LO, unveiling a new chapter that would etch his name into the annals of Techno history.

“I remember showing both Tiesto and Skrillex what I had been working on, and they both loved the darker tracks, but they advised me to release them as Oliver Heldens, not under a new alias. They might’ve been right for what the hybrid-style tracks were at the time. I knew that eventually, I would likely start leaning more and more into the Techno world with this stuff, so I still decided to move forward with launching the new alias and, at the same time, also launching my label Heldeep in the summer of 2015.”
“During the first few years of HI-LO (2015 – 2019), I treated it more as a fun side-project, releasing only around three tracks per year. Some tracks leaning more towards
Electro/Bass/Tech-House, others
more towards Techno. From 2017 onwards, I was inspired by Techno artists like Enrico Sangiuliano, UMEK, Wehbba,
all their sets up till the and Reinier
Zonneveld. In 2019, I made the HI-LO track ‘Poseidon’ which Enrico and UMEK started to play in almost
pandemic; this track also put me on Reinier Zonneveld and Adam Beyer’s radars.”
