Your calm presence in the DJ booth is notable. How do you balance this inner calmness and the dynamic energy of your performances?

“It doesn’t come naturally. I need to actively and consciously work on it all the time. I don’t do drugs to keep me awake, and even if I have only caffeine, it affects me a lot. I’m a bit sensitive, I guess. I realised If I have coffee to stay awake for a performance, I get nervous and anxious. It’s all about knowing yourself and adjusting to the circumstances. “

“I try to stay awake by adjusting my sleep sche- dule according to my performance. I try to take naps before shows. To stay awake, I drink mat- cha, mate or decaf coffee. I’d be lying if I said I meditate regularly. I do it at the end of a phy- sical yoga practice, but I’ve been a bit off this regular practice lately. This is something I want to add this to my routine as a non-negotiable, as I can see the benefits of good exercise with a bit of meditation right away. If I’m anxious or hyped after a gig, some calming breath exercises definitely help. I also used to get more nervous before shows, and now I’m more calm as I am more confident in the booth after playing so many shows in so many different scenarios in the last few years. But I think in the end, the key is awareness of your current emotional, mental and physical status and optimising yourself with as little compromise as possible for your physically, mentally and emotionally demanding job.”

With the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) being a milestone for many artists, how was your experience at this year’s event?

“I have been playing ADE for some years, and it’s a very important place to be as an artist, regardless of the stage of their career. I started going there as an aspiring artist to meet other artists, attend conferences, and test gear; then, I started playing shows, meeting the faces behind the labels who signed my music and more. My agent now kind of ‘discovered’ me at ADE in 2021 :) As the whole industry is there, including people scouting talent, I think it’s a pretty good environment to immerse yourself in if you choose music as your career, regardless of whether you are an artist, agent, promoter, etc. I had many small shows this year, so I was running around a lot. But as usual, I made some good connections: saw many, many friends, had an amazing first time b2b with JAMIIE, met my new managers in person and most importantly, had fun” :)
