Pulp Fashion exhibit
Hat by Katie Allen
The Milliners Guild (USA) used the lull after the spring racing season for a summer challenge to its members – to create a hat out of paper. The result was the online exhibit ‘Pulp Fashion – the Poetry of Paper’, a presentation which highlighted the versatility of paper, the ingenuity of milliners and the joy of making. Members were able to choose
conventional or unconventional materials. Conventional
presented by the Milliners Guild
included paper pulp materials that are available from a millinery supplier. These are often marketed as an inexpensive straw alternative and common trade names include toyo, shantung and paper cloth. Unconventional included materials that might be found at home or at an office supply or art store such as newspaper, art paper, crepe paper, etc. Milliners embraced a
variety of materials from packing paper to card stock and experimented with new
techniques including folding, shredding and bonding. Across the designs there was an air of whimsy and playfulness: a nod to familiar forms like an origami paper airplane or a colourful paper cocktail umbrella. Other entries were inspired by more abstract themes such as nature, transformation or fashion history. Those who worked
with traditional millinery materials like toyo capelines or paper straw cloth often incorporated paper in the

trimmings or opted for a paper craft process like stencilling paint. Those who worked with unconventional materials learned a lot about manipulating and transforming a two- dimensional object into three dimensions.
