Fold the pattern around the block with the rounded side at the bottom and the square side at the top.

The seam will be at the back. Mark the back piece and the front piece, then mark the centre front and centre back line.

Tape the seam with masking tape on both the inside and the outside.

Line up the centre front and back of the block with the pattern, and tape them together using masking tape.

You may have some ease when the width isn’t 100% the same around the bottom and top of the block.

If so, make a small cut in the middle of the pattern card piece, overlap the card and use masking tape to join it again.

Only the first layer is attached to the block; all other layers are attached to the card itself.

Take care not to tape over the marked lines, otherwise you will lose your centre front and centre back marks.

Cut 16 pieces of 14.5 × 15 cm by tracing around one master piece, to cover the card shape with four extra layers.

The block will have five layers of card in total, which is strong enough to block either felt or bias strips of sinamay on it.
